I have 3 mx 850's that operate all the electronic devices in the whole house using both rf and ir. I programed them over serveral years . 20 devices, many macros etc. I am very happy with the set up. Yes, you've guesed it, I now have more devices. My question: is there a remote made by URC that uses the same software but can handle more devices, or similar software easily transferable.

Same software? No. If you want to use the 850 software, you're stuck with the 700/800/850, and they are all limited to 20 devices. The MX900 is kind of the replacement for the 850, and it can handle up to 255 devices. However, it is different software, and you can't just open your 850 file and download to the 900. You will have to re-create your remote file. You can use the universal browser to drag your commands over from your old file to your new one (if you have any learned commands in), but the easiest way would to be just to program it from scratch.

Thank you for the information. Does URC provide software to the consumer for the 900 series remotes, or is this dealer only?

With the newer remotes (MX-880, 980 and 6000), you can't get the software from URC unless you're a dealer that has access to their Control Room. For the older remotes (MX-700/800/850, 900 and discontinued MX-950), you can get a fully-functioning but non-updateable version of the software from URC's website.

Well I wouldn't really consider the 900 an older remote, per say. It's still a current model on URC's line-up. Technically so is the 850. But yes, the statement on the software stands the same.

In other words, if you want live update - be sure to buy the remote from someone who will supply it.
