Does anyone have any links or contacts for someone like me who want to turn a tablet PC into a IR Remote? I have waited long enough for an ipronto and I think I would rather get a tablet PC but have absolutely no idea how to program one for ir capabilities so a link or any direction to find someone would be appreciated. Of course I intend on paying to do the work.

Microsoft has been developing something like this for a few years but no workable product yet: it is based on a variant of the tablet PC which communicates with a server to process and send out commands: I will post the link if I can find it

a tablet PC does not have an IR output and is larger than the iPronto

bottom line is the iPronto is the most advanced form of tablet PC designed for this application and probably your best bet at this time

while it is a big disappoint for now, I have to believe Phillips will eventually get it right:

such is the cost of being an early adopter!

Hi Mark, long time no speak!

I actually received an email regarding this exact topic and I was directed to this website:

www.cinemaronline.com

I have since emailed them to request some additional information. It seems that they make software for this exact purpose, to convert your tablet PC into a workable remote control. I am curious as to how the IR will operate and will be certain to find out. Tablet PC's like the Viewsonic Aipanel v150 are under $1000 and have a 15 inch screen. Combine the price with the screen size and the above mentioned software and you not only have a killer remote but, money left over from NOT buying the ipronto.

that is the link I was looking for! Thanks Eric

I checked out the Viewsonic tablet PC but my fav is the Compaq TC1000: they are thinner and sleeker and come with a detachable keyboard

would be interested to hear how you make out with this- at this point my iPronto is an iPaperweight

Hey guys, I have and use the software from www.cinemaronline.com, the software is great. They have an entire suite of software that will control all home theater equipment from a pc, some additional hardware required "Slinke" can be found on their website or www.nirvis.com. I use a viewsonic 15" airpanel and it all works great. I also have an ipaperweight, but have actually got it working very well now. I use both systems, guess I'm just a gadget freak. I would be happy to answer any questions about the cinemar software "MainLobby" if anyone has any, or call them directly & speak with Mario, he is very helpfull and informative.

P.S. - cinemar software also supports x-10 through the Slinke device

There are many options which leverage an existing tabletPC.

Netremote is the first option, but requires an HTPC to be fully functional. http://www.netremote.org/ and it uses your CCFs!!!

There is an excellet server/client combo, very slick, using Binary Metal's Digital Theater Pro. [Link: binarymetal.com] Stan is updating regularly. Can use IR receivers & transmitters.

Viewsonic Smart Displays (vs Tablets) were built with remotes in mind. The 10" is cool and more multifunctional than the iPronto. The 15" is big, and a good bargain (relatively) less than $1K.
