general info I picked up from a review:
the iPronto's embedded computer is based on an Intel PXA250 XScale embedded processor.

embedded Linux operating system, built-in OSGi service delivery platform (mBedded Server, from ProSyst).

Tao's Java Virtual Machine (JVM) provides a secure application execution environment.

-------

I wonder if it isn't possible to strip the iPronto down to its OS or install a different OS and run another software application such as NetRemote. Not that I have an Ipronto, or would be willing to be the guinea pig if I did...

Hi!

I got an ipronto ru1000 a week ago. In my opinion it is a very interessting device. But the software...

I started to take a look behind the scene and started to show properties with javascript and PHP. Than i found out the browser is java enabled. some applets are executed.
I am not a java geek, but take a look at [Link: lueftenegger.at]

I wrote a very simple filebrowser and a fileviewer for textfiles.

I have an iPronto that I have retired because it is locked to only download a old version of beta firmware. Since I can't get later versions, it is quite useless to me now. Two questions:

1. How can I change the bootloader (or equivalent) to download the latest firmware?

2. How can I change the firmware? Anyone tried WinCE.Net or something? Or a better implementation of linux?

Hi!

It's me again. This time i found out some interessting things.

I installed a proxyserver at my desktop-pc. At my ipronto i set up the network using the proxy. Now i did an update at the ipronto.

Things i found:

The ipronto requests an updatescript from an url.
the logic for the update is coded in the script, that the ipronto gets from the url.

Now i configered the proxy to redirect the updateurl to an script located at my hdd.
i changed the original updatescript to echo "Hello World" on screen.
Now i "updated" the ipronto and i saw "hello World"

It worked!!

ATTENTION: I think this could be a way into the ipronto, but also a way to damage the os at the ipronto.

That sounds like fun....

but in your proxy watching - anything of interest about the guide data ? Living in a region that is not supported, I'd love to play with an ipronto and its epg stuff, but dont know how hard it would be to hack / fool it...

I can easily get an Australian xmltv file, host or manipulate it on my local PC's, use a proxy to do any redirects etc... but I am sure it aint going to be as easy to just use an xmltv file format...

Hi!

Look at this:

[Link: boot.pronto.philips.com]

Ipronto executes this script for update. This seems to bo turbe script for turbo boot:

misch

p.s.: janaserver2 is a good tool to fool ipronto. at my desktop i installed janaserver and configured the proxy. Next i configured my ipronto to use the proxy.
Janaserver is also able to redirect urls to a local directory so ipronto is downloading and executing the script from my own desktop.

Attention: aou are at high risk to damage your ipronto!! If you don't know what you do exactly, it is better you don't play around.

Hi!

Today i did an interessting observation:

I downloaded an i-linux cd iso-image. And installed an pre-compiled zImage on the ipronto. As it was to expect the kernel did not work. I reset the ipronto and entered the "bios". set all values to update the firmware. After turning off my jana2 ipronto did the update from the philips server and now it is working fine again.

So The update process is executed from the bios and can't disdurped by the installed os.

This give you more freedom to try changings in the OS without being afraid of make your ipronto unuseable.

@satscan: you managed to enable ftp. I am not an unix specialist but i guess this is done in the zImage. Would you share it?

Hi!

It's me again;-)

Today i have two stories to report:

1. Some days ago i tried to open my ipronto to see all HW components. My plan was to take photos of the device to see what usb-controler is used and so on.

This doesn't work - there is more to do than to remove all the screws at the backside and i don't want to damage my case.

If someone knows more - take photos from the whole thing and post it!

2. I was trying to redirect the whole update process to my local hdd. But the ipronto crashed while booting when the update files had been loaded from my hdd. First thought was windows is changing something at the files in a strang way (I had to download the images at my computer). Today I used the monitoring feature of jana2 do watch the update process. I recognized ipronto isn't downloading the file "zImage". My first idea was the file name is the only one without an extension. So I renamed it to "zImage.a" and also changes the file name in the update script. What to say - after re-update ipronto is working fine with all files downloaded from my local computer.

In my opinion the image "fs_image" is the file system in jffs2 format. Yesterday I found websites saying these images can be mounted on a linux machine.
For me this is not as easy as it sounds - I don't know linux verry well, but it is "just" an os. So it is only a question of time.

Hi misch,

keep going. Don't stop here :-)))

JFFS2 sounds a bit familiar - the good, old SAT receiver "Dbox2" from Philips (who else) uses the same filesystem to boot from (stored in two EEPROM). Fascinating.

If you're able to load the iPronto "image" to your local drive on your PC, modify it and could bring it back to the iPronto - wow, I will join you then :-)

There are a lot of free proggies for I-Scale and this java container stuff. If we could open a bash shell on the iPronto :-)

Well, keep going. I will pray for ya ... (if this will help ....)

Best regards,

Kalle

Hi!

@Sirkalle: Thx for your support!

Here is an another interessting link: [Link: d-fischer.com]

Serve it with the ipronto and click options.(!! WINDOW !!!)
A collection of cool applets running on the ipronto could be a good way for improving the capabilities.

We should start to build a prontoportal with
- a applet collection (running on the "standard" software)
- a mod section (with the work of this threat)
- ...
