All of the equipment controls fine with the remote except the dvd/vcr player (phillips dvd-740vr) will not switch to dvd when the "play a dvd" button is pressed. it is one button on the player which says source. it toggles the video back and forth from vcr to dvd. Also I cant get it do anything to the cable box (panamax 4300)

Can the "Help" button fix the dvd/vcr input problem. If so, then it's a timing problem. Increase the inter-device delay. Else, it's an input configuration problem. By default, the Phillips DVD-740VR device input settings is configured to use the discrete method #2 with the discrete "InputDvd" and "InputVcr" commands. Check their behaviour in device mode. Note: Many devices supports discrete commands although they may not be available on the OEM remote.
