Okay, I almost bit the bullet...but after reading some of the posts here, I think maybe I shouldn't buy this remote.
My sony touchscreen remote is working fine, and it is programmed through software on my computer...it is just too large to operate easily with one hand, and the touchscreen doesn't give the tactile "no need to look where my finger is" buttons.
I thought the harmony 880 would be easier to use, but it seems that there are A LOT of people with bad units.
Is it worth taking the chance that it might have problems (screen, tilt sensor, etc)?

I looked at the 680, but when I held it in my hand and played with the buttons, it didn't seem to have a nice tactile response. The hold, etc. of the 880 just felt a lot better.

I programmed my 880 for all of my needs. In fact, my "Activities" include such normal commands that I very rarely need to access a "Device".
My only problem was the original charge cradle. Logitech sent me a replacement and that has since worked without any kind of glitch.

May I suggest the Harman Kardon TC30 remote, which for most practical purposes is an 880 but with a more refined build/chassis. I have had mine for a couple of months and really like it alot.

Go for it. I think you will be very happy you did. There have been issues for a lot of people in the past but I believe most of them have been resolved.
I was given a Sony AX4000 as a gift and it was miserable. After spending 20+ hours trying to get it to work for me I gave up and returned it.
I then bought the 880 and I love that remote. I later bought a 680 as a second remote. Of the two I much perfer the 880. Some people do not like the smaller buttons on the 880 but I got used to them.

I have to second ELA's response. Love my 880, never had the cradle issue, just make sure you hear the beep when you place it in there.
The only sympton I had was the the edge of the screen had the light issue, just simply changed the screens background with the images from squareworld and problem solved.
I still continue to expand the use of this remote, I have it set up for the main living room, bedroom, and now for deck music. The ability to fit 8 activities per screen makes it simple to select and you can rearrange to put your most used ones on the 1st screen.
You do get used to button feel, the 5 has a raised dash so you can center your thumb and know where your at, the skip and replay have a small point on them as well so you locate the transport keys without looking, a few other things but you get the idea. All in all it's a great remote.

Update: I bought the 880, and so far I have been pleasantly surprised. I am glad I did it.
Thank you for all of your comments...they made the difference.
