whats the deal with the 890 ive programed 179 880s and on my first 890 i can only read, open, update, whatever once in a blue moon, i got all the current firmware, software, is it really that bad

No.
Either bad remote, call Harmony and rma it.
Are you using ver 6 software, it will not work on ver 5, ver 7 coming it will work on all remotes
