I will fiddle with it a little more, but to tell you the truth I am not nuts about Philip DVD players/recorders. If I do decide to buy a new DVDR, what would you recommend for use with the Harmony 880? 3 key features I need are no auto dvd disc start, zoom, and a friendly menu system.

Also, avoid TOAD (Toggle-Only Actuated Device) brands. Look for brands that support discrete input selection. Discrete power on/off is also desirable. Before you buy, add the device and check its command list for discrete input/power commands. Note: Although the original remote may not have discrete buttons, the device itself may support discrete commands. Sony is a very good example of that.

Danno, don't give up yet. You just need to think
outside the box.
1) In your 1st post, you said that it always goes
to CAM1. Well at least it got out of the internal
DVD. What was the "Adjust Input" method used (Flip
through the inputs, Go directly to the input,
Bring up menu with button cycle, or Bring up a
menu with direct button), and what were the command(s)
used?

It only stays in internal dvd input mode if there is a dvd disc in it.

2) In post 6, you said it ignored the "Monitor"
command. Did you try this command in device mode?

Yes, if a dvd disc is in the player in ignores all input until the FBI stuff and then main menu is displayed. Then a STOP command has to be issued to switch to EXT2.

3a) While in internal DVD, what happens if you
issue an "InputNext" command (try it in device
mode)?

All this command does is switch between DVD and TV.

3b) While in external input, what happens if you
issue an "InputNext" command?

Same as 3a.

4) What happens if you issue an "InputNext" command
after you issue a 02 command?

It goes to 002 input which doesn't exist. InputNext then toggles TV/DVD.

5) In device mode, try the "InputVcr" and "InputDvd"
commands. Do they do anything?

Froze the DVDR615 for about 30 seconds.

6) I just noticed that the default "Adjust inputs"
(see post 4) sends 02 followed by some amount
of "ChannelDown" commands. The "ChannelDown" command
does not make sense here. Maybe all you need to
do is replaced them by the "InputNext" commands.

Again InputNext only toggles between TV/DVD so it is useless for me.

I will check out the SONY dvdr's next time I am at BestBuy; sounds like Sony designs them to work well with a Universal Remote.

Thanks,
Danno

Wow!, this sounds like you have the wrong IR language for that device. Under Device > More Options, try "Confirm infrared commands". It will let you know if it finds a better match.

Like I say I have the first gen DVDR615. The 2nd gen has a completely different menu and remote (my friend has one). Is there any way to manually lookup Philip devices on the logitech web? I would like to see if there is a gen1 and gen2 listed...

But the main problem is if there is a dvd disc in it and using the original remote doesn't matter. So I would say bad design by Philips and live and learn.
