Hello there, sorry to jump in and ask for advice but I'm trying to get my boyfriend a funky xmas gift, which is hard. He likes gadgets that I don't know much about and wouldnt trust sales staff not to take me for a ride if I went in without ANY product knowledge (not much decent shops in my area).
Anyways, he builds computers and that lark and he has the full home cinema system setup. But I wont pretend to know all about it and I dont think its too important for what he'd want the remote for?
He'll want it to be able to work everything from one remote but with a hint of cool. We use the x-box as the media centre and have it networked through the house. I could ramble on so if theres something you need to know just ask I'll try to answer.
I saw this particular remote by chance (harmony 885) and wondered if there are other ones that are better (with more settings controll on all the weird stuff, like where the picture sits in the screen for instance).
Put it this way if you got it as a gift would you think "yay" or "oh, but **** is better *whine*"?
Again, appologies for jumping with the whole "could you tell me about something technical" thing, but I'm finding it hard to research due to ignorance. Thank you in advance.

Actually I did find this forum which has helped: [Link: avforums.com]
This remote seems to be the favourite and do all the right stuff.
Although, if anyone knows different I'd love to hear.
Regards.

Go for it.

He won't be disappointed....

It's a cool piece of kit

The 525 performs pretty much the same functions for 1/3 the price (depends on your budget).

See this thread

The 525 has less memory though and can't cope with more than 6 pieces of kit - so bear that in mind...

I'll get it right one day...

I have multiple Xbox's that are being used as media centers as well and the problem that i had when i got my 880 was that it worked perfectly.. turned everything on.. BUT the xbox was never designed to be turned on from a remote control.. so I was using this awesome remote that did everything BUT turn the xbox on so i had to get up and turn it on manually...

After purchasing some xbox mods in order to fix this problem my life with xbox's and harmonies has been trouble free :P

at the price I don't think it can be beat, but you did as

and wondered if there are other ones that are better (with more settings controll on all the weird stuff, like where the picture sits in the screen for instance).

and the answer is yes, there are the Pronto TSU-3000 (but B&W) the ProntoPro TSU-7000 and the MX-3000 from HTM. Also the 885 is easy to configure and is done in hours, the ones I mentioned take days to set-up but you can put any picture any place.

Also, you won't find the others as easy to use.

You could go with a lesser harmony (655, 675) as well - they're cheaper but provide identical functionality - just no color LCD.

This is an excellent remote. I brought mine just over a week ago and have had no problems. Took only a few hours to get it working perfectly. Works all of my av gear great. I personally find hard buttons much more user friendly than touchscreens, although this is just personally preference. Also another plus is that if you do have any problems then the people on support at Logitech are great. Always helpful and open all evening in the UK. Definitely recommend. If you do decide to buy then look on CCLonline as they are selling them for £130 and deliver next day.
