An historical aside:

Actually 1 pole (perch, rod) = 5½ yards.

A medieval measurement, nominally the length of two oxen. It's primary use was as a goad; whilst one man ploughed another goaded the oxen with his pole. However, consider . . .

4 pole lengths = 22 yards = 1 chain (the length of a cricket pitch actually).

40 pole lengths = 220 yards = 1 furlong.

1 furlong x 1 chain = 1 acre (which is nominally the amount a brace of oxen can plough in 1 day).

Not daft were the old medieval Brits.
