I think the real lesson there Mr. G, is that we should do the responsible thing and switch to something less deadly... Like inhaling solvents. For gods sake. Think of the children.

tobacco is the deadliest..luckily i don't smoke but it appears to be better if i was a heroin addict than liking the booze according to the stats

Whilst the bare facts mentioned would suggest smoking to be the most hazardous (not to mention making one stink - a side effect that most smokers are completely unaware of) I had to vote for alcohol, not only for the directly related deaths . . .
