Heh, they're talking about elections here in Canada again. They've only been in power for 9 months, but it's a minority government and they've been hit by a ton of scandal lately...

Whats going on? from the stuff we see and hear over here (quite a few people i know have recently moved to Canada because of the better lifestyle and opportunities and because they are fed up with the UK) Canada has normally been ran very well.

"A British politician is usually caught with his hand up a woman's skirt while a Canadian politician is usually caught with his hand in the till."
- Sun Media columnist Valerie Gibson

I always thought it was dodgy envelopes on station platforms, but then I remembered Blunkett.

You read the Sun as well djy? I learn more about you each day.

Hand up a womans skirt ? hanging ,wearing tights with a orange inserted some on his person is nearer the truth.

Not sure of which version of the Sun Ms Gibson writes, so cannot comment on journalistic standards. One thing is for certain though, it cannot be lower than that of the Daily Sport.

nothing real bad. It is more that I am electioned out, and there is no one to vote for so it takes the fun out of it.

I guess the system must be a lot like the UK bout in case it is not:
we have a parliamentary system with 308 out of them the leading party got 135 and that is less then 1/2 so it is a minority government. By Canadian law any parliamentary vote for a bill can be turned into a vote of none-confidence and force an election (if more then half the people there that day vote against that bill). That is why Minority governments are trick, you need to make sure at least one other party with enough votes will be on your side.

The last federal elections were in June 2004.

Now for the scandal:

there are several parts to it.

Back in 1995 the liberal party was in power federally and Quebecois were going to the booth to vote on a referendum on sovereignty.

There is a law in Quebec on how much each side can spend on any election/referendum, to make sure there is a levelled playing field.

What came out some time ago was that during the campaign the Federal government (led by the liberals) paid a lot of money to some companies for fake services so that they can help out on the campaign and the money would not show up on the spread sheet of the "stay united side". What came out more recently is that they also did the same thing except the money was diverted to the liberal government. Or to put it an other way public tax payers money was diverted and laundered into changing a few political outcomes.
