I'm a noob at all this. How do I start working with hex files to costumize remote controls with descrete codes? What is a good hex editor, and do I need to work in ASCII? Some of the descrete codes posted here could be useful but I don't know what to do with them. Any input is welcome. Thanks in advance.

All that depends on which type of universal remote you are using.

But it is very unlikely you would have any use for a hex editor for discrete codes.

If you don't yet have a universal that can do discrete codes, the best low cost choices are a URC-8820 plus JP1.2 cable or URC-8910 plus JP1 cable:

I have the MX950 remote and want to know if there are descrete codes for HDMI1, HDMI2 and HDMI3 inputs on a Visio 60 plasma. If so how to I insert the codes in the MX950?

I guess I should have asked for those URLs. Discretes are posted at RC in many different forms. Without knowing which you mean, I can't tell you how to use them.

"Visio" or "Vizio"? I can't find any info on Visio TV's, but there are lots of pairs of similar brand names, so I can't assume you mis typed.

If so how to I insert the codes in the
MX950?

Most sources of discrete codes either are in Pronto Hex or can be converted to Pronto Hex.

The MX950 editor has a "Universal Browser" button. Depending on the version of Universal Browser you have, you may be able to paste Pronto Hex directly in. If not (or if pasting Pronto Hex is less convenient for other reasons) Universal Browser drag Pronto Hex from a CCF file.

Most Vizio devices use NEC1 protocol. Most CCF files with NEC1 protocol use a condensed form of Pronto Hex that Universal Browser doesn't understand. You can use MakeHex to generate the form of Pronto Hex that Universal Browser does understand and either IrPanels or Hex2ccf to convert MakeHex output to a CCF file.

Hey thank you John. I will try these things you've listed. I want to learn all I can about costumizing remotes. Like I said I'm a noobie at doing this just started programming remotes a couple of months ago. I need to learn about it since I'm sure I will run into this stuff. What I want now is to start easy on learning a few basic things and work from there. I have another Sharp LCD that I found the descrete codes for imputs on RC, but I haven't the time to mess around with the codes (hex codes) to import them into a MX950 yet. I hope the Universal Brouser button will do the trick. But I'll try your advice.
For now I don't even know where to get Makehex. and also ProntoHex editor. But I'll do my research on these.

Any imput is welcome.
Thank you.
