I have an interesting Hardware design problem:

Build a device that will turn ON a TV - any TV ( once set up for that TV).

I can use any remote chipset and learn IR codes but for those TV's that don't have discretes how can I make sure I don't turn it OFF?

Any ideas?

Thanks

Bill

If you have some kind of programming that uses variables, you could use a variable to track the state of the TV, and send the desired commands appropriately.

Usually MOST tv sets switch on if you press a Channel number. So in your case, the Power ON for that TV will be a channel number. Each time you press it it will go on Channel 1 for example (or turn it on if it is off). The off you can use the standby/on combo button. Hope this helps.

I beg to differ. Very few TV's do this.

Hmmm,

Sounds like I need to sense the condition of the TV.
A rudimentary current monitor on the power cord could do it - if such an animal exists

URC's MSC-400 uses video and power sensors to sense the state of the TV.

Use a niles triggered outlet. Use the niles connecting block with the 12volt trigger. Instant discrete off.

Then for an On state
Issue 12 volt off to cut the power
delay 2 seconds
Issue 12 volt on to power the set... this usually lands it in standby
Delay for 4 or 5 seconds on average.
Issue Power command.

AN UGLY DISCRETE ON!!! That works on most TVs that I have tried it on.

But is sure works for the Discrete Off. :)
