What is the difference between the .mxd and .mxf file extension?

When I try to download an mx file from the files area at remotecentral. the file saves as an mxd.file but MX editor files end in .mxf., so mx editor won't open it.

May be a lame question, but I'm short on time and maybe someone has a quick answer.
