Are there any inexpensive remotes that would let me upgrade
a remote using a computer and by going to the website of
the mfg for the download upgrade?

I am familar with JP1 however everytime I have to use
it I have to refesh myself with how to use the program
and hope someone has already written something for
the remote I have.

I am looking for custom software making it really easy to
do the device upgrade.

The other quesiton I have is are there any full screen LCD
remotes such when a device is selected it sets the screen
up to look just like the stock remote layout? Or though
computer software allow you to design the remote layout
to look like the stock/original remote?

thanks,
Ken

You want a fully configurable LCD remote for under $100. I don't know whether that exists. If it doesn't, I'm sure it will soon.

You want a PC configurable remote with software that is easier for a beginner to use than JP1 software. I don't know why that would be hard for a company to provide, but I don't see any evidence that anyone is going in that direction. The Pronto software is just as hard for a beginner as JP1 software and all other alternatives I've seen are even harder.

The less than $100 would be for the non LCD remote of course.

I heard the Harmoney remotes where simple to upgrade.
Internet to their site and download the dev. But their more
than $100.

My 8810 remote works with JP1. Built an interface and have
used it. My problem is everytime I go to use it I have to read
all the newbie files just to remember how to use it.
Most of the time I want to upload an existing dev to my remote
and that's it.

Logitech has just added the Harmony 520 to their line of remotes with an MSRP of $99. It has fewer buttons on the LCD than the previous Harmony models, but seems to be close to what you're looking for.

I went to the link. I couldn't really read the buttons, so I clicked on the link for "larger views" and they were smaller pictures, WTF!

On a more serious note, there are discussions on the 520 on the Harmony Remote Forum you should check out.
