From my search I suspect I am out of luck, but can the zone 2 volume on this receiver be controlled via a remote?

Don't know about DS-787, but my TX-NR80E doesn't provide volume control in Zone 2. Since the Zone 2 outputs ar high impedance, not speaker outputs, it assumes that you have volume control on whatever you are using to drive your Zone 2 speakers. In my case these are powered speakers with their own volume controls.

The DS-787 isn't compatible with discrete zone 2 commands. If you have a zone 2 button on the remote try pressing it, then use level up and down (not volume up and down). Make sure that zone 2 is configured as "variable". Good Luck
