I'm installing an older Marantz NR 1601 for a friend, and have a couple questions for those familiar with the brand. Looking through the URC database, there is nothing for this model, so I need to know is Marantz consistent with the code sets they use (or did in the case of some older AVR's). I know I need to set the various inputs for both audio (digital) and video, and since I do have onscreen to the TV via component, but when I select Tuner I do get onscreen with the channel selected, os the video to the TV should be easy enough to get up. Right? Help an old guy out....

Many of the similar models will work. if not Marantz has the Hex codes on their website you can use. [Link: marantz.com]

Thanks, So, I need to connect via Analog, or HDMI in order to get the onscreen menu. Knowing that, I need get the TV into either ( the old Panny PDP) I'll need to find the remote, or add a file to the MX990 to get there. After that, I should be good to go.

Specific feature codes come and go, but the base set has been the same forever - so things like power and volume should work with any modern or old codeset. if it has HDMI the OSD should appear on it, minimally for the menu system, but I think overlays (like a volume bar) might require the video processor to be enabled on older models, otherwise it’s in bypass mode. The oldest model I’m presently using is a SR5009 which is just a year newer than the NR1601, and it operates pretty much the same as my Cinema 30.

I understand that the on screen menu for set up will only work via composite or HDMI. I'm going back tomorrow and run a temporary HDMI from the close, down the hall way, from TV to equipment closet, so I can do a set up and hopefully get the component video feed working.

Goodness what a terrible manual. How on screen display works when using HDMI or Component… Note, does not work at all with Component.

Very frustrating project trying to save this old plasma set that looks great. Sadly, there are no other new TV's that will stay inside the cabinet framework. A 65 will be one inch too wide, so the TV will not recess into the opening, and anything smaller will be swallowed up. Tried the HDMI cable on the Panny and got no happiness, but for whatever reason, it has two HDMI ports, neither of which work. No other inputs beyond the component, and the PC or serial inputs.

Client says "Get a new TV!". The choices are: Samsung 65" OLED, LG 65" OLED, or a Sony 65" Bravia II LED, and of course TCL 65 Oled's. Price wise the Sony LED is interesting, and although it may not have the best picture, it will still be many times better than the old PDP, and it's priced at about half or more of all the others (Under a grand).
The PDP is down off the wall. Not sure what to do with it, since it's really not worth anything.

I literally gave away a Pioneer 60” 1080p Kuro in perfect working shape 4 years ago. Plasmas hold very little resale value, especially if it’s not working right. Does the client have any particular viewing habits, like they leave the set on all day or watch some channels a LOT? Are they the type of people who would appreciate top notch image quality, or is cost savings and indestructability valued?

He does tend to leave the TV on most of the time when he's at home, and according to some friends, he has WAY to much money, so price isn't an option. He's the kind of guy that says "Just do what you need to.". Push come to shove I may forget about that Marantz and get a new AVR as well. Had a friend come by and we took the PDP down. Man I don't remember it being SO heavy (says 120 lbs + the mount), when I put it on the Chief PDR by myself back 18 years ago. I still may need to run some HDMI or install an extender for the coax or the one cat5e that I put in place all those years ago..

So, I ran a HDMI cable down the hallway, and have the onscreen display. Sadly, that where it ends. Loading other model number codes from the URS code set, and pretty much nothing works. Client doesn't have internet which certainly doesn't make things any easier. Got back home and the Marantz IR list won't load. Ugh. Client got a TCL 65Q77K, and of course there is nothing in the URC code sets for it. Tried different model numbers, and the mute, and volume down work, but the volume up does not. Tried learning from the TV re,ote, but it fails every time. I know why I don't want to do this crap any longer...

Older version of the URC software? (no login?) There are only 4 code sets between all the TCL TVs. Code set # 749 should work for current (Google enabled) TCLs. The TV remote is a voice remote, so it's bluetooth. Can't learn from that.
Unfortunately that exact model is a Costco exclusive. Many times in the past we all have seen how those models sometimes are stripped of features (especially in control respects). I would have NEVER allowed the customer to buy a Costco model. That probably was a huge mistake. This maybe why it's a problem, but might also be newer Google TV enabled models are just lacking proper IR control in general - but the Costco model thing was certainly a red flag. 137 code sets for Marantz (most of these are extended sets for same models). I guarantee you control for the NR1601 is in there. I would start with the 10 code sets for the NR1602 (there are 4 main and 6 extended).

I'm not arguing, I'm explaining why I'm right. |

Brad, I'll try the #749 codes to see if they will get me there. The TCL is a Google set, and really all I need for it is on/off functions, as it's just being used as a monitor (replacing the old Panny PDP monitor). Messing with the Marantz yesterday and wouldn't you know the batteries in the OEM remote went dead, so I could even control it with them, and it's hard to use the front panel buttons and run from the equip closet out to the great room to see what happened. But, at lest I'm getting exercise....

Bobl, When I go to the Marantz site, and try to download the IR code page it just never loads. Think I'll call to see if they are no longer supported.
