Picked up a TP-link WIFI 7 router.

Apparently a mistake since nothing we have will work with it?

The modem and router supplied by T-Mobile fiber has no range, as I don't get enough signal to run a Firestick out in my shop, some 50 feet away.

The reason to try the upgrade to my own router is to get better signal strength, and have less buffering on the display inside the house, where the displays are a lot closer (20 foot tops).

So, do I send this back and get a WIFI 6 router, or what?

I have the TPLink Wifi7 BE11000. This is the best router I have owned. I have 3 mesh units connected to the main unit. I don't currently have any Wifi 7 devices, but have many 6e devices. This unit has allot of wifi bandwidth and having 2.5g ethernet ports allows me to connect my wired devices via 2.5Gb switch. I would keep it. Best to buy for the future.

Still running Wifi 5 here - I think I have maybe ONE Wifi 6 device? Anyways, the fact that it’s 7 isn’t the issue, as they’re all backwards compatible.

Placement, AP design / power and proper channel selection are the most crucial things. Does your router have 6ghz? Also, more, less powerful APs are typically between than one big one - signal, especially >2.4ghz can only go though a couple walls max and still have any speed, and masonry or plaster makes that harder.

If WiFi 5 is working satisfactorily for my customers, I’m not recommending that they update. In a few cases clutter has moved in nearby and WiFi 7 can better deal with it. Until recently WiFi 7 had a premium price. We still don’t have many client devices, other than phone/pad and a few computers that use WiFi 7. Only recently has WiFi 6 started to become more common on client devices.

Plug in this bad boy and report back with how well or shitty it works.

The thing about this is when the router gets plugged into the modem, there is no internet connection at all.

Plus the old router they supplied and the internet connects immediately.

I'm at the beach, so the bride was trying to get it to work, and she gave up.

So, I told her to box it up and I'll take it back, and will get something else. Maybe just a cheapie WIFI extender...

Apparently you don’t need to worry about PPPoE with T-Mobile Fiber, it just uses normal DHCP through your ONT, but it is possible your area requires VLAN tagging to work. If you’re not seeing ANY internet at all, that’s probably the issue. This is something that would have to be configured on all non-supplied routers.

Get a Unifi extender......

So I may have missed something.  Did you have a working system but added a wifi7 box to it?  What I am getting at is if you have two units broadcasting wifi with the same wifi name and password, life will be miserable.  Rename one or turn one off.

My shop is maybe 40 feet away and I don't get enough signal to connect to a Firestick in the shop.

Plus we get some buffering on a Roku that's maybe 15 feet away from the router.

I disconnect and power off "their" router, then connect the new router and power it on. Get "Connected no internet".

Service is T-Mobile fiber as they bought Limos Fiber.

At the beach we have Focus Broadband fiber, which was ATMC, and I have my own router that has a great range and no issues at all.
