Wow its been awhile since I've been to this forum. So long I earned a "comback kid" badge when I logged in. I'm not really in the business anymore, but I knew where to come for the experts when I have an issue.

Background, I have a Denon AVR-S960H running a small 5.1 setup in a living room and using Zone 2 / Monitor 2 for a TV and a couple outdoor speakers on the lanai. I turned the lanai into a sun room so now the outdoor speakers will be truly outside and I added a soundbar to the TV for TV sound inside the sun room. Apple TV is the only source on the AVR and I use the ATV remote to control the AVR power and volume.

Problem, I am not getting any audio on the HDMI 2 out with the current settings. I get Zone 2 audio to the speakers, and the soundbar works because I get sound from any other source on the TV, just not the HDMI input from the Denon.

If I switch OFF HDMI control in settings, and switch HDMI AUDIO OUT to TV, I get sound through HDMI to the lanai but lose AVR sound inside. Then if I switch HDMI AUDIO OUT to AVR I gain AVR sound inside but lose the ability to control the AVR via the ATV remote because the HDMI CONTROL setting must be turned to "OFF" to do this.

Is there a combination of settings I'm missing here that will allow me to just play audio through HDMI outside while maintaining HDMI control inside?

Sounds like you are trying to make the Denon do more than it is capable of.

If I'm understanding this correctly; the easy solution to this is just buy another AppleTV and put it on the sun room TV. You could then stream 2 different things on each TV if you wanted. An AppleTV only cost $150 and you could even get a nice used one if you like.

You are WAY over complicating this.

I'm not arguing, I'm explaining why I'm right.

I can already do that via the app on the TV or any other of the TV’s in my house. But that’s not what I’m wanting to do.

Sounds like the receiver is doing exactly what it is designed to do.

If you are wanting to share the AppleTV between the two rooms get a 1x2 HDMI splitter. Send one output to the AVR and the second to the Lanai TV. This will get you sound in both rooms while watching the same content.

Only caveat with this is you may need to adjust the audio output settings on the ATV as the Lanai TV may not accept the surround codec.

You can't fix stupid

To overcome the delay issue, I have used the splitter on the output of the receiver. Worked on my project aanyway.
