Friend picked this RX-V1200 up and I'm trying to test it out in the shop. This is reminding me why I so hated Yamaha AVR's, other than IMO the nasty sound quality. First thing is the display being way to dim (from age?). Second thing is the ordeal in setting it up, since you get not on screen on the TV using component video cables, instead MUST use a plain old RCA cable from the composite output (I know it's old, but good grief). Now, I'm into trying to get it to do something other than stereo and after getting it to do test tones, I get nothing to the LFE/Sub. I did at least get test tones to all the other speakers (a small win?). Don't have the original remote but do have a MX980 that seems to be getting me where I need to be, although the URC database doesn't have all the commands (do most Yamaha codes work across the line?).

The subwoofer output must be enabled. See P22 of the manual: [Link: usa.yamaha.com] I don't remember all of the details, but I think that you should be able to step through the commands while viewing on the display. This will avoid using any special buttons on the remote.

I have an RV-V1400 that I use as desk amplifier. It has no problems with the display brightness, although not extremely bright. It is definitely possible to set up without a video display, just using built-in LED display. Here is my list of its commands. (You can use IrScrutinizer to convert it to another format.)

I've gone through the set up menu. Connected a cable from the video out to the TV, and have set the speakers up, including having the sub turned on. Go into the test tone, and get a tone on all except the sub. Still playing around with it today. Could be a bad sub (I have a second to test) Could be a bad cable (I have extras) Could be a bad output (can test with a multimeter) I really need to stay retired... LOL

What are the odds? Two speakers are dead. Looks like two subs are dead as well. Next move is to pick up a couple bookshelf speakers that I can test before purchase, and a sub in the same manner.
It amazes me the people want to command a high price, and then want you to trust their "works great" statement... Going to take the pry bar to the old Velovdyne tomorrow so I might be able to see what went wrong with it. Does work, so no loss if I destroy it. Heading to Amazon to pick up something tomorrow after tearing the Velo apart...
