UPDATE ON THIS SUBJECT!!
Ok, somehow I let the stress of those out of state TVs get to me to the point I was not thinking with the logic/troubleshooting part of the brain!!There is more (somewhat) interesting background info to this long story, let's cut to the chase and I hope this helps someone:
So far I was up to 5 C2/C3 Series newer OLEDS on installs with impaired control:
In the process of trying to work with LG and URC support on this, nobody ever suggested RS-232 control of the OLEDs and it also never occurred to me in my fight or flight stress state!
First counter-intuitive item didn't know with LG OLEDS is their Series are mathematically backwards:
My older OLED bought shortly after they came out is a C8, also it's easily IR controllable. Newer models could be C5, C3, C2 and these are the Series that do not seem to be backward-compatible with IR.
Finally my TV rep suggested RS-232 control to solve this and he was correct. There's all kinds of misleading info on the Google about it, which doesn't help, so here's what worked:
1. The "service 3.5mm jack on the rear DOES WORK as the port for RS-232 control.
2. Although the LG is technically a 3.5mm TRS jack, URC RS-232 pinout is unique and requires a 3.5mm TRRS (4 conductor) plug. Best solution is to use a pair of 3.5mm TRRS plug ends like these and wire each end appropriately to LG/URC spec: [Link: amazon.com]
3. All over the web, there's BS about all of the steps you need to take to "enable" RS-232 control on an OLED. NOPE. FROM my older C8 up to a new C2, all we have done is build the correctly wired TRRS cable, turn off Quick Start and now we are RELIABLY controlling LG OLEDS through URC Total Control.
Case closed on this one!!
