The weather is not particularly warmer now then it has been all summer, but a couple clients reported this issue. You can click on the button that says "run cooler" but it doesn't seem to make any difference. Wonder if anybody else is seeing this.

I think they are both Roku Ultra, but they might be earlier versions, after the 4 went away.

Have never seen that on an Ultra before. The Roku Sticks, absolutely! Why I don't recommend those. But never the Ultra or Express.

They wouldn't happen to be that special Walmart model would they. The Roku Ultra LT.
Because those things are worse than the sticks! Still hadn't seen one of them overheat but everything else - audio problems, video problems, remote paring problems, just dying suddenly, etc.

I went back and looked at the dates. One was installed in 2018 so that could be a Roku 4. I have an old one of those in the garage and it actually has a built-in fan. Maybe in the case of this customer, the fan has failed. The other one was installed in 2021, and I would have thought that would be an early Ultra. That is all I put in, Ultras.

Are the sticks being powered by the TV's USB port, or a wall wart?

The Untra LT can be bought from Amazon, too.

Yes but the LT was built for Walmart and was a Walmart exclusive for a long time. Now it's available everywhere. Total junk however, should be avoided.

Most USB ports on TVs don't have enough current to run an AV device. Should never use those to power such devices. I know tons of people do but a lot of those people also end up having issues, even when they don't realize it.

It has been a few generations since I have had to deal with any Roku sticks. They may have dealt with the overheating problems now. But I still tell people NOT to buy them, because they are RF only. The Express 4K+ is $10 cheaper, exact same specs & remote (other than Dolby Vision), plus can be controlled by IR in addition to RF. It's a no-brainer!
If customer wants/needs Dolby Vision & Dolby Atmos, then time to step up to the Ultra. Also USB & wired network ports.

I never got a overheating message but I was concerned about the heat. So, I cut a 1.5 inch square hole in the top and added a real heat sink to the tin RF shield that they also use as a heat sink. The plastic was about 1/8 inch thick. I used a dremel cutoff wheel to carefully make the cut and to not go very deep. The heatsink gets warm so it is doing its job.

Here is how to get to the internal Temp reading if needed:
Grab your Roku remote and press the Home button continuously five times.
Press the Fast Forward | Play/Pause | Rewind | Play/Pause | Fast Forward buttons once.
On directing you to the hidden menu, you will be able to notice that the Temperature of the Roku TV is displayed on the top of the screen. Make sure the temperature is between 0 °C to 40 °C.

Here is the heatsink I used from Amazon. Described as: 4PCS Black Aluminum Heat sink with Thermal Conductive Adhesive Tape, 40×40×20mm Heatsink Cooler for Cooling VRM GPU Stepper Driver 3D Printer Stepper Motor

With the older Roku stick, heat IS a problem. That's why they came out with a "fix.

A simple HDMI extension dongle to move the stick a little farther from the TV (so it hangs down below the TV.

I have a ROKU Ultra and have never had it flake out over the heat, but the TIVO in the same close did.

My antique TIVO suffers from heat. What I did with it is stand it on end and add a small fan that move fresher air across it. That has worked for a long time, and MAYBE that has helped with the ROKU as well, since they sit on the same shelf?

I bought a Stick when one of the old large box Roku's became obsolete and it wasn't great, from the 'It's behind the TV, so the remote doesn't work well. Then, I bought one to replace another old Roku and not long after, they stopped providing updates for those two and I had to replace them. Both were powered by a wall wart and I never saw a heat problem, but I swore that I wouldn't use a Stick again. I use the Express and other models because they can be placed where they work best.

The Roku 4 was released 2014. It was soon replaced by the 4630 Premiere Plus in 2015. The Roku 4640 ultra came out in 2016, followed by 4660, 4670, 4800, 4802, and just released 4850.

Edmund, thank you for that! I’m copying that into my phone for reference.
