Artison makes soundbars as well as speakers that flank the sides of the set that might be worth looking at. Custom made grilles to match the height of the set or width of the set, with lcr connectivity. Worth looking at.

I have used the Sennheiser Ambeo a couple of times. We didn't supply them. they do have a subwoofer output but it needs to be wired. I think they have a wireless option now. Definitely one of the better sounding sound bars but it should be for $2500. One of our suppliers carries Seenheiser but only their mics and pro stuff. They don't get the sound bars otherwise I would look into carrying them. They have a lesser priced model but I haven't used it.

Also consider how you are going to use the system for music. I acknowledge that there are plenty of soundbars that sound better than Sonos. But you can't forget the advantages of Sonos that outweigh the sound quality of other solutions (not to say that Sonos sounds bad at all):

- You can expand to other audio zones in the house wirelessly with inexpensive, great sounding small speakers or use Sonos Amp to power your own passive speakers. You can have them all play in sync or play individually at a touch of a button.

- With the use of HDMI e-Arc connection, TV, and Roger Ignite or new Bell fibe box, you won't need any other equipment and all you need is the stock remotes to operate. If you're adding a Bluray player, you'll know what to do with a simple automation remote - albeit, you won't be able to use voice control with third party control if you are into that. Plus, IR commands can be unreliable with these new boxes.

- The app is very intuitive and probably the best way to control music for multiple rooms. This is the number one reason I do less multi-room amps and control systems that used to take hours to program. The app also allows you to control Spotify, Apple Music and others. You never have to exit the Sonos App to search and control music. I don't think any other system can do this. If you have other family members that are low tech but don't mind using an app, this is probably the solution for you.

By the way Sonos is releasing a couple of new exciting speakers with spacial audio. The Era 300 can be used as stand mounted surrounds with upward firing speakers to create pseudo 5.1.4 with the Arc. Tuning of the sound profile involved the help of prominent, world renowned, mastering engineers so you know it's going to sound even better. The same could be said about the Sonos Arc, which can sound very good in a small room like yours.

I don’t know why Sonos speakers are in this conversation at all considering this is a new construction project. Wire for speakers. Use Sonos as a source and not their speakers.

Because in a casual listening room, it might be a benefit to have a more simplified solution. He can save the premium equipment for a proper, dedicated media room.

Sonos has in wall and in ceiling options as well.
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

Thanks for the comments! Oh, and I’m in Ontario so that probably doesn’t help. :)

Thankfully this is a small builder basically building his own development two houses at a time, and he’s quite open to significant changes. That does make many things possible, but not necessarily cheap or advisable.

After spending decades with a 4.0/4.1 setup I’m a pretty big fan of center channels for vocal imaging - but of course a crappy center isn’t going to make me happy either.

For some reason bookshelf speakers hadn’t come to mind - probably because I’m like there’s no way the wife will allow some big black boxes there, but they do come in white and wood tones, which could be acceptable. I’ll have to float that idea since it would keep the mantle area looking cleaner.

I built my speakers and they do an outstanding job with the center- I have heard people whom I know on TV and radio- their voices are so realistic that when I was reading and heard someone ask "What are you doing, Jim?", I answered. Sounds really dumb, but my mind was on whatever I was reading and it sounded as if he were in the room.

My speakers were built using Vifa/Peerless drivers, so a very similar sound would come from Triad speakers. Mine are a 2.5 design, but as long as the midbass is excellent, bookshelf speakers with 6-1/2" midbass drivers should work.
My mechanic told me, "I couldn't repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder."

Here's a link that shows how serious Sonos is about sound. Head of sound for Universal music is the also the head of sound for Sonos:

Dude! Lay off the Sonos koolaid a little lol

Sonos has some OK stuff. But nothing Sonos makes is a good value. You are paying a premium price for anything they make. This is the same for the other wifi platforms as well - Heos, MusicCast, etc. So I'm not just picking on Sonos.
This is fine when it fits the install well. But there are other ways to go about a WiFi audio system that are a better value or even hybrid Sonos to get better value using Ports & AMPS. [That includes cost up OR cost down systems].
Sonos doesn't have any secret sauce. Most everything on the market can work with ARC/eARC these days. Everyone has soundbars. And other companies have great WiFi systems too (Heos, MusicCast, BlueOS, etc.). As far as Spotify goes, yes the built-in interface is nice - but not everyone uses Spotify. And even if they do, most other systems auto launch the Spotify app when selected and is pretty seamless. No one thinks its an issue on any other system I've seen.

Again, talking about Daniel's future system. I got the impression (from his past and current systems) that he may want a little better than what an 'all' Sonos system could deliver. He also has no problem putting together mixed components to make them work good together. And with the walls being open and able to pull wire anywhere right now, an 'all' Sonos system doesn't make any sense but to Sonos fanboys. He might end up with Sonos sources for music streaming. But speakers & amps can be wired for universal right now.

So many questions need to be gone over with the house layout and rooms.
Is there a central location a small rack can go? Is there a location in the rooms that wire can be pulled to from the TVs and 'potential' speaker locations - looped to the central rack as well maybe? Outdoor TV or audio system - maybe in the future?

Use 4 conductor for all your speaker runs, that way if something changes you are ready (self powered speakers: 2/power, 2/signal - no problem). 2 pulls to the TV locations (passive soundbars will have enough conductors for 3 channels). Subwoofer locations: double up the conductors or DVC woofer(s) - no problem.

And of course Cat6 or higher everywhere. EVERYWHERE. Don't forget potential WAP locations for your WiFi. To your doorbell location. And possible camera locations around the outside of the home. A blank plate under the eve doesn't look as bad as wire running around the eve of a house in the future.

And run a fiber cable from the outside point, to where you plan on having your central location at. A pre-made fiber cable will work - try to find out what connectors the local fiber ISP is using and order the same (LC, ST, etc.). If they change or get it wrong, you can always get adapters to change it. What is very important is the type of fiber SM (Single Mode) or MM (Multi Mode). I would think SM is what you will find for the incoming line (it is everywhere down here from all the different ISPs). But always check.

I recommend fiber to the TV locations and other points where you might want high bandwidth. The fiber will likely be dark for a while, but handy in the future.

You have no idea how much I wish this was a full custom build (or “my” property at this moment) where I could just go in and run every freaking wire I want by myself to every location. As it is… I’m having to prioritize at arms-length what the builder should do pre-drywall.

I’ve added CAT6 to all major rooms, garage, and multiple WAP locations. Multiple security camera CAT6 runs to the soffits for full exterior coverage. Rough-in for wired security. Doorbell I just plan on using a Ring Pro (happen to have a brand new spare one). Dedicated UPS/battery backup power outlets. My main concern right now is sound for the TV and music in the great room, since running behind the fireplace wall or into the vaulted ceiling later will be less than ideal.

It’s a bungalow so it won’t be THAT hard to add other things to the main level later. And there’s just no way everything I want is going to get done in the timeframe. The basement will be more involved since that’s where the theater, office, and equipment is going, and I have a lot of “wants”.

I’m not scared to open walls to add cabling later - just trying as much as possible to avoid having to do that right away.

I can imagine the builder rolling his eyes -- "isn't everything is wireless now?".

Do the Sonos ARC with a SUB and a pair of ONESL  wall mounted for surrounds.  This little active combo sounds much better than it has any right to, and it is bulletproof.
