For those that vote for the Sony…why?

From a little bit of reading, the JVC beat the Sony in PQ and lumens over the last year or so. The release of the Sony 6000 seemed to remedy the lumens war between the 2 brands, and now seem equal. But the contrast ratio seems to be better on the JVC? The JVC does cost a little more.

I used to sell a lot of Epson’s before the 4K days and their service was exceptional. How does JVC and Sony compare to each other in the event a projector has an issue (in or out of warranty)?

JVC has a advanced replacement policy for one year. 3 year overall. I have found dealer support pretty darn good.

As one of the Judges (and setup personal) at the Value Electronics PNJ Shootout last December here is my take on this.

IMO; yes the JVC won (black level and detail as I recall were the reasons), but as mentioned the Sony was less money and damn close in results.

It is also important to note that there was minimal "out of the box" adjustments on the Shootout samples (time would not allow).

Both have awesome support, JVC has great in-house Reps (Chris Deutsch and Patrick Seibert know their stuff) and support.

Sony has same, and offers tremendous control options and (I think) can be ISF'ed to a higher level.

Picking either the two brands will not leave you disappointed.

In all price class comparisons there was definite reasons to buy up (JVC had 4 units, Sony had 3, entry level JVC was still a traditional bulb), and the Sony often straddled class price points.

In short get the one that is available through your trusted Rep network.

It is also worth checking which one has the best compatibility with your control system of choice.

Thank you Brett! My Disty actually sells both. He also felt the JVC had a slight PQ edge but is slightly more money. The Sony (afaik) has direct IR, IP and RS 232 control. I don’t think the jvc has direct IR (must use an emitter) but I know it has rs232. Not sure if it supports IP control

Control will be RTI and I’m told there are IR and 232 drivers in the RTI database

I realize that I am an old man, and somewhat stuck in my ways... but, I am an IR fan (secondly RS232). IR works great on the Sony, there is no command lag, and you do not have to worry about network traffic causing lags. RS 232 is great for the same reason, but IR connections are usually easier.

IR is my last choice, IP is my first choice. RS-232 can be a problem if there are multiple units to control because it's not really a buss system.

A problem I'm beginning to face is Bluetooth control because control systems don't support Bluetooth.

We use both and I prefer the JVC. Definitely better for HDR with its frame by frame adaptation. I might give Sony the advantage on regular HD accuracy. We calibrate the projectors we install, so I don't always factor which looks better out of the box. The Sony is usually a little more accurate out of the box. Something to consider if you aren't calibrating.

We did have some problems with Sony a few years ago and they were a bit of a pain to deal with. We got resolve but it wasn't easy.

JVC I have only had two problems in 20 years. Both projectors we had to send to California for repair. One was the old HD series so that is about 20 years ago and one a few years ago with their less expensive DLP model. They are supposed to have a 1- or 2-day replacement program for their DILA models under warranty, but we have never had to use it. Those projectors are like tanks and still have a number in the field like some RS-1s that have went through over 10 bulb changes and still working fine. I think the build quality is better on the JVCs.

Epson, definitely has the best service but no true 4K and we have had to use that service some times. Still a good choice in the under $5k territory though.

For me it's about the customer's budget. The VPLXW5000 is better to me than the DLARS1100 for $1k lower MSRP, and it's laser.

The RS2100 is better than the 6000 and $1k lower.

I don't see enough difference between the 6000 and 7000 Sonys that would make it worth $16K difference. The DLARS3100 is $16K msrp and I feel like it's better than the Sony 7000.

The only reason I go with the Sony over JVC on the higher end models is that the JVCs have been a little bit hard to come by. I prefer JVC.

I have yet to sell the DLARS4100 monster, but one day maybe.

The last thing I will say about JVC is that sold me is that when I call Chris Deutsch, he answers the phone (as long as I don't forget he's on the West coast and call too early). He's even gone as far as talk directly to my customer and help sell a projector. He also was willing to meet me and customer at my Disty to demo a projector when he was in Houston, or even take it to the customer's home and set it up there.

I like my Sony rep, but Chris just takes the extra steps to earn business.

I have had no issue with IP control of JVC for years. RTI/ Crestron. That said, I have sold more sony over the last two years, but none with a control system. The black levels on the JVC and the right screen/ room are great.
I may be schizophrenic, but at least I have each other.

DLA-RS2100 + SI ZeroEdge Black Diamond is our go to.

If budget is an issue we recommend RS1100 with same screen.
I came into this game for the action, the excitement. Go anywhere, travel light, get in, get out, wherever there's AV trouble, a man alone.

Just realized I posted this on the wrong thread.

I just found out that Chris Deutsch has moved on from JVC after many, many years of service. JVC has definitely lost a great asset in Chris.

BTW, if JVC made a laser projector in the $5k-$6K msrp range, I probably wouldn't sell any more Sonys, unless specifically request by the customer.

For those that have installed both JVC and Sony laser projectors:

What is the warm up time to get a usable picture and is either Mfg better/quicker than the other? Are the pricier models better/quicker than entry level laser models?

I assume the wait time is better than bulb projection.
