Can I send digital coax (SPIDIF) over a basic analog balun?

It is 2 channel from a DA system going from one rack to another (~60'). Was previously done via coax but I needed to retask that wire to feed a cable box. There are a couple of unused cats in place between A-B.

Local distributor is OOS on digital audio baluns (Thursday at the earliest). Was hoping to wrap up the job tomorrow and I have a whole bunch of analog audio and camera baluns kicking around.

In my mind it shouldn't be a problem. Crappy old camera baluns will send HD video for TVI systems, digital audio shouldn't be a big deal.

One of those dumb things I swear worked back in the day, haven't had to deal with it for years and am drawing a blank.

My initial thought is no, it won't work.
A TVI balun is using different frequencies than a S/PDIF balun does. And the transformers in the balun have to be wound to work for the frequencies intended.
You can get 'wide' band baluns that will work for a large group of frequencies (CATV baluns come to mind). But the wider the bandwidth, the larger and more expensive the balun becomes.
Which is why I don't believe the small cheap TVI baluns will work. But you could give it a try. If the frequencies are close enough, it might work.

I remember 25+ years ago when I first tried an analog audio balun from MUX lab, to try and send a coax digital signal over cat5. And it didn't work. Scratched my head until I dug into the engineering of the product to understand why it wouldn't work.

I know I’ve used an analog video balun before for SPDIF. Couldn’t tell you which brand it was as it was about 10-12 years ago.

Fred, no.
That was well done in the past by NTI (?).

Seven years ago I had a setup that worked over about a sixty foot length of wire.

It was one pair of a CAT5, connected using no balun or other matching device, fed from a plain old video camera that I had rescued from a restaurant that was going out of business. The camera had a mic on it, so I hooked that to another pair and got audio without any hum whatsoever. I used the other two pairs for power. It was intended to be a cheap and dirty way to see a space and it worked way better than I had any reason to expect.

Try it! You might have to go to CAT6, but it might be no more difficult than that. If it doesn't work, heck, it's already Wednesday.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Thanks guys.

I waited somewhat patiently for the part to come in and it is handled.
