Any of you guys used Elan in a commercial environment? I would NEVER go anywhere near an RTI handheld again but their processors have been rock solid; how are their touchscreens in terms of reliability? I am loving Elan so far for residential but I don't know how they would fair in a commercial environment. It is a small job with just 7 signage TVs and cable boxes; high end residential building in NYC.

Well, when it comes to commercial, especially meeting spaces or bars / restaurants, you sort of need the ability to create custom UIs, which Elan doesn't allow. You are essentially forced to use their pre-made pages and layouts.

I have worked with both companies. Some of the OEM icons in the Elan software are licensed from my company (Blackman Signature Designs). RTI on the other hand, allows for completely custom UIs and graphics.

There isn't a lot available for RTI in the Page Wizard for commercial, but I created a purpose built UX just for commercial applications. It is called Quantum, and includes both a meeting space project, and a bar / restaurant project for various resolutions. All the graphics are included for you to customize them and create your own TV . office layouts etc..

The RTI in-walls have always been rock solid, but I would prob ably go 10" or larger if you are controlling a large number of TVs in a restaurant environment. iPad is also a solid solution. They are inexpensive and portable with great battery life.

I didn't want to comment before, only because I've had zero hands on experience with Elan. However, everything that GW said about RTI is correct. WE have done a lot of RTI in commercial environments with very little failure. In-wall controllers and iPads are your most reliable options. Handhelds never seem to last more than 3 years in those situations.

In your version of commercial i think Elan would work just fine. In the examples from the others, i can completely understand where they are coming from and i believe that they are mostly correct.
Definitely don’t use a hand held remote.
You can customize Elan a bit, definitely not as much as RTI, it just depends on what you truly need. Sometimes a standard interface is better than a custom one.

I’ve used elan in multiple commercial projects and it was great. I think the verticals list view instead of horizontal view works better for commercial. I did a golf course with 12 TVs, 14 audio zones and Lutron Homesorks integration, the GUI has been simple for all employees to use. And the owner of the club can come in and change music because he already has elan in two houses.
Civil War reenactment is LARPing for people with no imagination.
