I have been annoyed with all of the spam posts that have been showing up here by the “it’s my first day“ posters. There hasn’t been much chatter about it here, but on another website, some folks are indicating that they are leaving here because of spam.

My thinking is that we need all the input from good people in the industry that we can get. For Daniel’s sake, a fellow we appreciate very much, it would seem like an important issue, what with Facebook groups seeming to gain traction, as other more traditional sites start to decline.

Isn’t there a way to filter out first and second posts, where they have to go through a moderator before being posted? That is fairly typical for other user groups.

Require new users to have a website related to our industry is a start.

this isn't a forum for just professionals though. maybe this particular section is geared toward that, but not the whole forum.

I thought someone said a while back that this website was completly built by Daniel and isn't easy to update.  Maybe the fix is to completely overhaul it and use a more common website building tool that has this functionality built in, but that's probably a shit ton of work.

I used to report a lot of spam here, but it gets pretty old after awhile.  Maybe have more moderators to handle spam immediately?

the trick is to find people you can trust to be fair. for example, i'd be a terrible moderator, since I'd just auto delete anything that Ernie posts.

I have seen some forum rules that require five posts before any are seen, as the first will be deleted automatically. Doesn't matter what the poster writes. They had a separate area for these initial posts, then the new member would receive a message when they were free to join the conversations.

Spam is a pretty weak reason to leave- if it was a problem with messages to the members, I might understand.

Not every integrator has or needs a website these days.

It was all the political stuff that got really, really bad that caused people to leave.

I have discerned Daniel has no appetite for regulating the "It's My First Day" spammers.

How about NO LINKS ALLOWED for new posters until they have reached a post count of 25?

Many spammers are a bit more sophisticated now and will post non.links.com.

Daniel hasnt been adding features to this forum software for years at this point. This is Custom programmed by him. there are no updates. There are no improvements unless he does them.

I think Most spam gets removed in a timely manner. I'm generally checking in 1-3 times a day, and I know Glack still visits as well.

If you see something for more than a day, feel free to drop me a pm.

Does the Report a post no longer work?

I get emails on those reports from all forums and try to handle them right away. Also, if a spammer posts multiple messages one report is usually enough to take care of them all, but sometimes one will get missed… so just report the missed one and I’ll nab it.
