It depends on the manufacture and if they are using it as a gimmick. Or as actual useful features.
Imagine putting the pot roast in the oven before you leave in the morning. Then activate the oven remotely 30min before you come home. Dinner ready and hot when you get there. Or the oven sending you a notification that one of the heating elements is out. Automatically setting the clock when power goes out and for DST. Notification the stove top was left on when nothing is detected on top. Etc...
Now washer & dryers: Not much extra you can gain from those being hooked to the internet.
Fridge & freezer: Remote monitoring of temperature and notification when temperature falls outside of the acceptable limits. Diagnostic, compressor failure, etc. Door ajar notifications. bulb out and part#. Control ice production. I would never leave the oven or even the dryer on when I am not at home. I guess that's why it never occurred to me that notifications from those devices might be important.

Why not? Don't you have wifi connected smokes to tell you when your wifi oven overcooked the pot roast?

Fridge & freezer: Remote monitoring of temperature and notification when temperature falls outside of the acceptable limits. Diagnostic, compressor failure, etc. Door ajar notifications. bulb out and part#. Control ice production. My replacement oven is WiFi enabled and was a feature I actually wanted. Three useful items are notifications that the oven has reached preheated temp, when using probe that it reached temp, and lastly if you set a timer on the oven that it has ended. When you are somewhere in or outside the house you don't always hear the chime. Oven does have the ability to remote start. However, for safety you have to actually put the oven in that mode by opening the door first (i.e. to make sure its empty) and then set the oven for remote start. Have never done it but can see maybe if you were leaving work and wanted to get the oven up to temp by the time you got home or something. Probably never use it or remember to set it up ahead of time.

My fridge and my stove are not on the internet, and none of my friends' are. Nobody I know wants their fridge and stove to be on the internet. The internet of things is a hype, it's not something ordinary people are clamoring for.

I came into this game for the action, the excitement. Go anywhere, travel light, get in, get out, wherever there's AV trouble, a man alone. |
