Like the title says, our friend Squire, aka Ichibinose, here on RC is in the heart of the misery in Houston. He and his family were evacuated via a neighbors air boat over the golf course to safety today.

One of his friends started a GoFundMe page that you can donate to here:

He and his young family are probably going to lose everything. This certainly adds to the stress.

Squire is a humble guy who would never ask for help. Please chip in if you can. I thought all of you would like to know.

Thanks.

Jeff

Its pretty unbelieavable. I have seen before and after photos where entire highways are under water. My house is about 100 feet from a lake. I dont know what we would do if the area flooded like that.

When Floyd hit NC I went down right after the water receded and spent a week doing mud outs. This is hauling everything out of the house, maybe trying to recover what can be saved, remove all carpet and strip the walls to the studs, then sprayed everything with a mold killer. We tried to do one house a day. Where we were at the water only got up to about 4' in the houses. How quickly the mold grew and how it covered everything was scary.

And just in case you live in a potential flood area, remember that home owner's insurance in most states does not include flood damage. Flood coverage is extra.

My sister and family lost their house, cars, belongings. They weren't in a "risky" area. 4 feet of water in the home by the time they were boated to safety. It hurts to think about it.

If one has the time and presence of mind to power down the house and remove batteries before leaving, a lot of the electronics can be salvaged after a prompt  clean water flush and drying -- before testing to see if the device still works. If the circuit is powered during the flood there can be catastrophic galvanic action in a short period of time while the circuit is wet.

Multiply the problem by Avogadro's number if it's a saltwater flood.

As an Andrew survivor, seeing this new devastation instantly brings back those feelings that hurt so much. Losing your home and belongings is something you can never forget...Julie, so sorry to hear this about your sister and family and I hope they fare well through the long slog ahead.

Thanks, ILO. They're grounded and have a lot of support, unlike many others. Of course, you want to pretend, "Well it's just material things ... they can be replaced."

But it's so much more than that. It's a life you built with your family, it's the culmination of everything you've done right in your life. I'm the asshole sister. She's the sweet, lovely one. Breaks my heart to think about what they've lost and and the hardships they will face in years to come.

yeah, it's hard to feel so helpless. Houston is my people. I put out word that we have a vacant house in San Antonio if anyone needs shelter for a couple months before renovation begins. I'd like to think we'd put out the same invitation even if we lived there.

It means "I am evil" but the RC edit window didn't let him write it properly.

He explained this to me once when I asked. It's German, including the last word.

He wrote "bose" because he didn't find a way to use o with an umlaut in the RC editor. An umlaut is the set of double dots found over a, o, or u in some German words (Blue Oyster Cult got it wrong and put umlauts where they don't ever go).

"Bose" with the umlaut, which can also be written " boese," means "evil' and is pronounced more like "burrs" than "bows."
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.
