I do a lot of work for a company. And they get me a ton of high paying jobs. So I do work for the employees.
I did a camera system for one of there employees who had a cablevision router.
Client calls I can't see my cameras.
I go today and cablevision did a update and it erased all my port forwarding. I talk to tech support and they said it happens all the time.
So beware cablevision will erase your port forwarding it you let the client use there routers.

You might be able to save some grief during future service calls if you can save a copy of the configuration.

I never was a big fan of cable company routers. I prefer to put them into bridge mode. That bypasses the router function. Now it's only a modem. Then install a real router. I am now using ASUS routers. Have not had one fail after installing them for about 2 years now.

So beware cablevision will erase your port forwarding it you let the client use there routers. And if the client buys their own modem/router that is the same make and model as what the cable company uses. Guess what, they will receive the same firmware and what not. Thus all of the changed ports will go back to default again. The cable system doesn’t pick out customer own equipment from the firmware update. So watch out for that too. KOT

Cablevision uses the shittiest routers ever made. To those that don't have Cablevision in your area, thank your lucky stars. They do not use a IP address/password to enter the router settings. You have to use the clients Cable ID and password. 99% of them have no idea what this is, so you have to first get them on the phone with Cablevision to setup or reset their Cable ID just to get into their shit router. ALLLLL Cablevision routers gets replaced.

Optimum usually gives you a Arris modem and a garbage router. Tell them you dont want to pay monthly for their router and buy your own router. Arris modem is not bad but it is usually refurbished. If they are charging for the modem rental as well I would buy my own.

It used to be easy until gateways became the rage. Replacing a modem is easy, router easy, but the tele modem complicates it.
To me it is senseless to buy the same brand and model of gear the cable company uses, which is the position we usually get put in.

There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions. |

I have never been limited to the same equipment the cable company used. I usually buy Arris or Netgear modems because they are good and we almost always use Ubiquiti Gateways/Routers.

Got a call today that everything on a clients network is not working, but they have fast Wi-Fi. Never occurred to them that when they had cablevision come to "upgrade" their speed that they would disconnect our network and put their crappy router in. It gets tiring having people trust the "cable guy" that leaves a pile of shit in their basement, drills holes in new floors, and are nice enough to give them a 10 hour window of arrival. If they wanted faster wifi, they should have called me. They certainly call me anytime they have an issue with anything. All we need is to upgrade their AP. They have a wireless N AP that predates the faster AC equipment.
