I just picked up a client that inherited a system when they purchased a home. There is an existing Netgear router with 2 of these access points in the home plugged directly into 2 of the ports on the router.

It works well and it looks like they hand-off to one another when I walked around the house with my phone.

We'd like to change the SSID and password. I looked through the manual and it looks like I'll have to default these in order to do so, since I don't have the admin credentials, (the company that set them up must have changed them.) They use a different SSID than the router. The router has it's SSID broadcast turned off and isn't used.

If I do default these units, do I just give them both the same SSID/ passphrase and that's all? Is there anything else I should set up in them for them to function properly?

Thanks!

the 4410 is a pretty basic WAP. they have no ability to "hand off" and are overdue for replacement at this point.

I always suggest using the same SSID and passphrases for WAPS.

Ok. It might have just been my phone jumping from one to another on its own, then.

Yes, part of the 802.11r spec.

But it would not be without a quick dropout. If you were on a WiFi call, you would notice it.

Try the old standard credentials- Admin/Admin (upper and lower case, if the first attempts don't work), admin/password (it really can work) or, there's always some kind of numbers on the label. Some installers are incredibly lazy when it comes to naming and securing networks.

I put a lot of those APs in and have probably replaced almost all of them at this point. Had power supplies fail or the mysterious "all the lights are on but no packets are flowing" problem. I think I had a waist high stack for recycling at one point.

Default U/P should be admin/admin. If not just hard reset and start from scratch. When the AP comes back up is will go looking for a DHCP server. If my memory is correct and the AP doesn't see a DHCP server it will default to 192.168.1.245 and if you plugged in all of the APs at the same time well you get multiple devices at that same IP address.

Set the name of the AP(location) if needed and IP address, then SSID and password, set channel and power levels and your done. It's a pretty simple AP. Handoff was never a problem, No SSID broadcast or no packet throughput were common signs of hardware starting to fail.
