Client asked how to preserve VHS recordings.

VCRs = gone.
DVD players - formats change.

Anyone have advice to future proof these recordings?

Soft copy.
Send it out, download finished product, make several copies for safekeeping

Digitize it somehow, dvd works for a start.

Then rip it to a hard drive with backup to the cloud. Multiple backups of multiple formats in multiple places.

My handle is Tweety but I have nothing to do with the organization of similar name. I just had a really big head as a child so folks called me tweety bird.

If you have a decent computer and some working knowledge of software, you can buy kits for doing this yourself. Most are USB dongles with composite/analog inputs. I could not tell you which ones are good and which ones to stay away from.

There are also many places that will do it for you. I have heard of some that will even copy commercial release tapes for you. I have one client who has a single U2 concert on VHS that was ONLY ever available on VHS and he refuses to let his VCR go, and is in the process of getting it serviced just so he can maybe watch that old tape again someday. :)

Digital is going to be the only way to preserve those old magnetic strips. If this is for family videos for nostalgia, put them all on several USB sticks, distribute them to all your family members as gifts, and have some kind of online/offsite backup, or 2. :)
