What did the guy say was the reason he didn't put a lag in the stud? Did he say the box was in the way even though he had 4 togglers in the wall? I like how his defense was that the drywall was installed wrong because there wasn't a screw in the piece that broke.

He explains it in this video posted in post number 1. [Link: wiremunky.com]

Basically, he blamed not being able to put a lag or two in the stud because of the old work 4-gang box.

And Judge Judy.

oh boy :-D

She lives around the corner from a client of mine. Maybe you can do a ride along with me when I go down there and hope she's out doing some gardening. You can chit chat about her various man hating cases. She does crack me up sometimes, I will admit.

Right or Wrong - how much does that tv weigh - 20 lbs at the MOST? I find it hard to believe that the weight of the TV alone caused the sheetrock to snap like that. He should certainly have drilled into the stud but i have to assume there was a decent amount of force being used to move the TV arm - if it is stiff.

My wife watches the show and recorded it for me to watch. I found it hysterical. The best part, ironically, is when they are interviewed outside the courtroom. One of the guys stood with his back facing the camera the entire time so we could see the name / number of the shop, which they were by the way, all wearing. Priceless.

I have two rules for articulating arms.
Two studs
4 lag bolts. The ones provided with the mount. No substitutions, even if I think the hardware is oversized for the application.

I have those rules for reasons exactly like this.

Back when a 60" Plasma tv was a shockingly expensive item (esp Runco), I had a job where we had to mount one in a built in cabinet. Said cabinet had a back plate, cabinet was built by a company that we worked with quite a bit, they knew our requirements.
Bolt mount to backplate, see 2x4s present as requested. Put weight on mount to test, all good. Hang display, pull display away from wall to cable.
Heard an audible pop, display settled. Grabbed the display as it started falling, yelled for my helper who came running. We managed to soft land the tv, mount and entire backplate without damaging the tv. Same could not be said for the cabinet, the top of the lower part of it got the crap gouged out of it by the pin nails that were shot into the back plate.

Called the cabinet guy to see what the hell had gone wrong. He came out and surveyed the damage. Turned out he had a new employee build this cabinet and while he had put in the framing we requested, he shot pin nails in to secure everything instead of screws. Guy normally did kitchen cabinets, those don't typically have any sort of weight hung from the backs.
I am a trained professional..... Do not attempt this stunt at home.

She had a vacation house down here for a while. May still have it. My step-dad did a remodel on part of it. From what the guys all said, she was a trip

How did the judge rule?

Just watched the episode on Youtube.

Judge gave the homeowner about $900.

He was asking for about $1200 but that included a brand new TV and she knocked the price down to include the current value of the existing TV. The reason was that it was her job to make things right, not leave them in a better position than they were before the TV fell.

I suppose you wouldn't have the link, would you? Can't seem to find it on YT unless I'm not using the proper search terms. Or either because I'm not in Australia.

The problem is that the TV was mounted with an articulating arm that is built to be moved around. If it can move...it will move.

As the professional it was up to the installer to say one of two things...#1.You can't use an articulating mount here or #2.The TV will need to be mounted 2 inches to the left so that the mount can be attached to the stud.

Lets be real here...those guys didn't even look for a stud. He made that excuse up while in court when he saw the photos that the Plaintiff provided. They popped that mount on the wall with togglers and the TV fell off the wall when someone tried to move it.

And Judge Judy.

Same here.

Judge Judy is our go-to court show. The Peoples Court is what we watch when we are out of Judge Judy episodes. I don't watch any other court shows. I cant stand Mathis and i think all the rest are staged.
