Arris TG1672 REALLY HOT...Normal?

At a client's, investigating network issues. Arris TG1672 TWC modem is running so hot that the router sitting on top's plastic feet have slightly deformed. I don't recall feeling one run this hot...Normal or replacement needed?

If the modem is running that hot. Then have your client contact the cable company. It's running that hot because it's attempt to compensate for the lack of signal from their network.

You should be able to go to the modem's main menu and look for the signal strength. Ideally it should be between -10db to +10db.

Bridge mode interface at 192.168.100.1 will not come up to check levels...Hmmm. Cable system in this house is bone simple...1x 3-way passive split at service entry and new Belden 7915a to each device. DVR shows -4 in the green and SNR excellent, so unless line was damaged in construction, the modem should be seeing same.

Can you plug that DVR into the same cable outlet as the modem just for testing?

If the signal for the DVR is way different a the modem coax outlet. Then the next step is to figure out which port that particular cable is plugged into at the splitter. That is if any of them are different to one another. Or the coax run from the splitter is a very long one, or like you mentioned damage.

The easiest way is to plug the DVR into the coax outlet the cable modem is using. Go to the test screen to see where the level is at there.

If they are having trouble and it is hot, the return signal is above 53db. A simple call to provider will yield the answer on levels, they can see it remotely

There was not an easy opportunity to move a DVR and TV to that outlet (which is up in a shelf of an office). They only have one DVR which is in a rack and one OLED which is wall-mounted.

They were spooked enough about the amount of heat coming off of the modem (sitting within a shelf full of dusty books and papers) that they want to replace it...So we'll do that and see if the new one develops a similar heat load.
