I heard Sonos is going to close their API. If that's true then doesn't that render all 3rd party control useless?

You've seen their API? They have never offered a published API, but their control protocol is based on UPnP. While there are no pretty code samples, for those who are familiar with UPnP, it is (mostly) self documenting.

That's my point. All 3rd party control has been reverse engineered by packet sniffing Sonos traffic. Sonos doesn't support 3rd party control which is why they can make any kind of change (Base64 encoding for example) and it breaks all 3rd party controls.

It's never been open!!!
They can at any point break the coding and all of our integration is rendered useless.:.atleast until someone reverse engineers it again!!

Actually, the talk last fall was that they were considering creating an open (i.e. actually documented and approved) API. Of course they could then try to keep it from anyone they don't approve of, but it doesn't seem worth creating a new API for that, given the UPnP functionality already there.

I was told there will be no major change in the stance that they have held for a couple of years. They will not break the current integration just because like they did years ago. They will work behind the curtain with larger integration partners to help with integration to a point and then advise them of any coming major changes so they can get out in front. It is the "unofficial official" API.
Expect no changes to the world we have been operating under for the last couple of years.

They talked about it last year: [Link: cepro.com]I expect to see "sanctioned" drivers at CEDIA this year, probably with Crestron, Savant, Control4 for starters.
