What's a descent budget friend projector for everyday personal usage. Mostly TV movies and light computer... It's going to be located in a family room with medium to low ambiat light.

Reliability
Image quality
Lumens

In that order.

Eventually this projector will be used outside on lanai by a pool ( obviously weather protected and vented) as a secondary projector

Most likely used with a JAP matrix
Ed will be known as the Tiger Woods of the integration business, followed closely with the renaming of his company to "Hotties A/V". The tag line will be "We like big racks and tight holes"...

Epson 5030. For 2k retail, I don't think you can beat it.

Or figure in that the 6030 for $1000 more comes with a spare lamp, mount, longer warranty, better margin.
Hey, careful man, there's a beverage here!

I thought the Sonys looked a little dim to me compared to the Epsons.

Agree. I like the Sony picture, but it doesn't have the real world lumens of the Epsons.

Once callibrated, the brightness of the Epson tends to fall a tad short of the Sony.

the 6030 is $3500. well over the stated budget of under $2k. Nevertheless, a great value and one hell of a machine for the money.
