BTW, you assumed I meant to leave the Bendix alone. Also, if I want to use a starter motor for this application, what makes a Bendix necessary, at all? There's no reason to dis-engage the motor- it's not starting an engine.
My comments on the Bendix spring started by referring to someone saying you could use the starter motor as a brake. I said no, you can't, not if the Bendix spring is still on it.
Consider, too: if you're using a starter motor, it has a Bendix spring. If you're "just" using a starter motor, it has a Bendix spring. If, instead of just using it, you're taking the Bendix spring off of it, you'll then be using the motor out of a starter motor, since a starter motor is an assembly that includes a Bendix spring, and without the Bendix spring it is no longer a starter motor.
