On the job today, client getting Time Warner because he wants it for internet and its TV channels are cheaper than Dish. That's exactly what he said. Halfway through the day, can't locate the main cable that we'll put internet and HD on, he says no, we're not swapping out Dish. We're going to have both.

By now the original cabling configuration is possibly right... but 2 of 7 Joeys show no signal.

There's a four port thingie, where I'm not sure what's in, out, or power, plus three 3way splitters. FWIW 3 cables come down from the dish and there's a power supply.

Any help would appreciated, any sarcasm expected.

Thanks!
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

You're forgetting model numbers.

The Hopper 2 and Joey (Joey 1) uses different splitters or whatever they are called as the Hopper 3 and Joey 2 system uses.

So knowing which system is installed would help greatly.

Thanks. I did indeed ifnore my signature. The Hopper is a 3 and I forget what the Joeys are. I can tell you they were only recently installed, though.

EDIT: Oh, yeah, it's a hopper 3 and six Joeys. (Or seven -- is seven a possibility?)

The day was pretty bad. I did fine gathering info for changes to be made (this was my first visit). Then the cable installer arrived. Let me save reliving the day by saying he was the most difficult worker to communicate with I've run across in years. His accent was strong and his English was very poor.

One little story: he told the client that before he started work, he had to collect a $17.95 charge. The client said the install was free. It went back and forth and the client called the office. Cable guy wasted fifteen minutes with this garbage, then folded and said it wasn't necessary just before the office said "don't pay it." What a jerk. So more than half of the problem was working with this guy. He makes me appreciate the normal idiots I run into!

Fortunately the client is not moving in for a couple of weeks. I also didn't realize until the end of the day that there was no frantic rush to get everything handled.

I'd like to help but I don't know what you're asking. Pictures would be helpful. If it's a Hopper 3, it will have Joey2's(maximum of 6). It only requires 1 cable from the dish. If a couple of the Joeys quit working, they more than likely got disconnected from the splitters.

You ignore your signature every single time you post a thread asking a question. That's why I call you a hypocrite.

Cable survey- do it.

When cable and satellite installers are a problem, the first thing I do is ask for their supervisor's number. They don't like it, but they need to know that we're billing hourly and their wasting time is costing the client more than they're likely to understand.

Also, properly qualifying the client would have given you the info you didn't receive until late in the day, much sooner.

How you do business is not their problem. Let them do their thing and make your changes later if needed. You are the custom installer and if need things beyond a normal providers install methods your custom title comes into play. I would have things ready and easily coonected, let them get it running and you tidy it up. Plan, explain if needed and bill for it. So many ask what it takes to sign on with builders. Maybe we are too needy as a profession.

Well, I've certainly learned a lot on this install! Your comments about my mistakes are correct. I simply can't ifnore them.

Cable survey- do it.

? What does this mean? Do you mean disconnect every cable in the house and trace it?

I was not able to find any central cabling location. One end of the house has a now-unused Dish Network dish on it, the other end HAD a DirecTV dish, which the new owner had taken down and replaced with a Dish Network dish.

None of the Dish Network wiring schematics I've found show a power supply of any type. This makes me wonder why there's a power supply. Also, I'm wondering if perhaps the old dish is still being used in addition to the new dish. This is possible.

The entire house is so well buttoned-up that I have to believe there's wiring hidden somewhere, perhaps even splitters and such. The place is so closed up that one upstairs section, about 500 square feet, has no attic access.

When cable and satellite installers are a problem, the first thing I do is ask for their supervisor's number. They don't like it, but they need to know that we're billing hourly and their wasting time is costing the client more than they're likely to understand.

Right. I'm not charging for the time it took to clear up my mistake, but that's completely separate from the time this guy took because he did not communicate well. And I still don't have all the Joeys working. (They're not moving in for two weeks, thank goodness!)

Also, properly qualifying the client would have given you the info you didn't receive until late in the day, much sooner.

Damn right.

goldenz, thanks for your comment.

Anybody have any idea which terminal of a Hybrid Solo Hub 203952 goes to what?

I've somehow managed to figure out that ODU means outdoor unit, but hey, I could be wrong about that!

"To host" means?

The two "To Client/HVN" go where?

And where does the power supply go, the one that I have not seen on any of the schematics I've been able to find?

Thanks.....
