I received an email from my ISP, Comcast. To see if I want to precipitate in a FCC broadband test. This is just for one of my Internet accounts, though I typically receive emails a few days apart from each other. So I maybe getting another for the second Internet account in a few days. But basically here is the email... Dear Customer, As part of the National Broadband plan, the Federal Communications Commission ("FCC") has begun a project to measure broadband performance. This test will cover certain aspects of an Internet connection, including the speed of downloading a large file. The purpose of the project is to obtain information about American broadband performance. As one of the leading service providers in the United States, Comcast is working with the FCC to ensure that the performance measurement tests are comprehensive and accurate. The FCC is looking for volunteers to help in the project. If you're interested in participating with the FCC in this project, please visit [Link: measuringbroadbandamerica.com]. If you are then selected, you will be sent a new NETGEAR router enabled with the "SamKnows" performance measurement software selected by the FCC for your installation at your residence. Comcast has not provided your name or contact information to the FCC, SamKnows or any other person in connection with this project. Your participation is completely voluntary and at your discretion. Based upon the information provided to us by SamKnows and the FCC, the software you would install only measures the performance of your Internet connection, and will give you access to the kinds of data that was only previously available with very expensive network monitoring tools. The FCC and SamKnows also will assure you that your personal information will be strictly protected and at no time will any personal information be shared or made available without your consent. Once your router is up and running, you will be able to view all of your performance data via a secure online reporting system. Over the next few months the FCC will work towards releasing a report detailing the performance of American broadband. To find out more, please go to [Link: measuringbroadbandamerica.com]. I hope that y'all tell your clients not to do this, as the router sent to them may/will, screw up your clients system that you worked long and hard on. KOT

Just prepare yourself for the day that the FCC "confiscates" (with your voluntary assistance, of course) any "excessive" bandwidth reported on your account for redistribution to those less fortunate...

Looks like a scam, to me. Is it really from Comcast? I wouldn't click those links.

Except to sign in to pay the bill or make changes. I probably have a total of 10 emails at that address for the last 3 years. You can go here to fcc.gov [Link: fcc.gov]Or search Measuring Broadband America if you wish. KOT

Why can the FCC not just get this info from the ISPs? They know who uses what.

Bring the rain!!! Ha ha, proof reading or spelling is not a strong point of mine. Besides, it's very easy for me to say... Look at my screen name. "partake" there, how's that? KOT

I'd be interested in contacting these folks just to get broadband.
I say that because I'm in a suburban area of Los Angeles where Verizon's service maxes out at 1 MBps because of loop length. If I understand correctly, it's not even legal to call that High Speed Internet any more, though they still call it that on the bill. And to make comparisons, I've been in the area called South Central, where internet speeds are typically 25 MBps!

Now this is funny. Comcast just sent me an email this morning. Stating that they just upped my download speed. It was up to 105Mbps now it's up to 150Mbps.
I rebooted the modem and router and after a few minutes, I received the fastest at 140Mbps. Where as before it was getting about 50Mbps. Shame that the upload is the same at 10Mbps. A far cry from my first internet speeds... dial-up.
I haven't replied to that original email, nor do I have any plans to.
