I can imagine. This was a short ten mile trip.

It's not a large amount by any means, but I narfed my left index finger with my brand new tongue & groove router bit. I went to the ER because A) I didn't know what treatment would be needed and B) insurance would cover it. They insisted on an X-Ray because they said they needed to find out if it had hit bone, which would be considered an 'open fracture', which carries different risks of infection vs skin wounds. When an evaluation was needed, a Dr came in, looked at it for a second and said it couldn't be stitched closed and snipped it off with a tiny scissors she had gotten from a drawer.

She was there for less than a minute and the bill showed "$585.00- Out-patient surgery".

I, OTOH, was there for over seven hours, mostly sitting and waiting. I understand the prescription for antibiotics, but I'm pretty sure they pushed the Vicodin just because they could.
