OK Ernie! 1Gbps!!!!!!!!! Well when you ask for help selecting a device that supports a given level of performance it is rather necessary to know what level of performance is needed. I was able to find a number of devices that would support a 1Gbps connection but nothing that would handle a 1GBps connection. Just trying to clarify. Thanks for all the !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for all the !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know I was just messing with you. I agree proper terms should be used, but I would also think it could be assumed it is 1Gbps Internet as it is the fastest internet currently offered in the U.S. Have you ever heard or seen of 1GBps internet?

I live in a rural area and around here 5Mbps is "fast". I have never heard of 1GBps access BUT 1Gbps is new to me as well. The fastest I was aware of was FIOS which I think maxes at 500Mbps for upgraded service. I think my daughter has FIOS at 75Mbps. Which is blazing fast compared to my 5Mbps. I think this is very unfair and the government ought to do something for me. I want my handout!!!!

Does the information you referenced apply in this case? Potentially, yes. The subsidies are used to keep consumer costs low for areas where telephone companies cannot recoup their infrastructure investment through reasonable subscription rates. There is a federal fund and usually also a state fund. [Link: centurylink.com][Link: centurylink.com]

We have a local phone company that offers fiber service including phone, TV, Internet, and security. They offer 1Gbs service. The joke though is that 1Gbs is $350 a month. Their base package starts at 768Kbs for $20. Our cable company (charter) starts at 60Mbs now for $45 a month. The phone company will bump you up to 8Mbs for that $45. They don't like it when I stop in their office because I tell them what a joke their service is.

If he wants an all-in-one, which I assume means wireless as well, you're going to get the best performance by buying one of the better consumer grade router with a nice fast processor. I really like the ASUS routers. The ASUS firmware is pretty good, but if you add the Merlin aftermarket firmware, it has some great additional features, but focuses on bug fixes, and often will beat ASUS with how quickly issues get fixed. Yeah some of the fixes are pretty esoteric situations, but it's nice to see the active support. So one of the latest and greatest ASUS is the RT-AC3200. You can find specs including LAN to WAN and WAN to LAN speed tests at Small Net Builder. [Link: smallnetbuilder.com]I can't say more about the great features and stability of taking the ASUS routers and adding the Merlin firmware, which is available here: http://asuswrt.lostrealm.ca/Here's a nice overview and discussion about the Merlin firmware for the ASUS routers at Small Net Builder: [Link: smallnetbuilder.com]I have an ASUS RT-AC66U, and it is a good performer for the money, and has been rock solid stable with the Merlin firmware, and provides more features than most people will ever take advantage of.
