Father in law just got municipal 1GB internet and called me for router suggestions. We dont and wont have 1GB here anytime soon, so I dont know what to suggest. Our standard Mikrotik, Cisco, Ruckus is too elaborate for him. Looking for a netgear, cisco, etc. from bestbuy or amazon. TIA

Asus routers are pretty reliable.

Just installed a Linksys AC1900 for my dad...It performs well.

1GB Internet? (or is that 1Gbs?) That's impressive in either case. And here I am with 5 Mbs on a good day. Sigh.

A router with that kind of throughput may be hard to find in the home market.

I know my goto router for home use wouldn't handle a 75Mbs FIOS conntion. I had to step up two models for that.

And in that line even the top model would limit a 1GB (or 1Gbs) Internet connection for certain operations.

Check the throughput specs for the various operations on any models you look at. Home units may not publish this information in much detail.

Good luck.

If he really does need the Gbps link, I think that you should configure a capable router for him and deliver or ship a "black box" for him to drop in place. And, it would probably be a good idea for him to install a real network switch after that router, rather than using router switch ports.

If you're looking for something "consumer grade", Netgear R7000 is a pretty good choice.  I've seen reviews that posted over 940 Mbps WAN-LAN speeds.  I've been using one at home for about a year and coverage has been solid.

I think you may find that the 900+ Mbps throughput for the R7000 was under somewhat special conditions which you probably would not use in the "real world".

But it is likely as fast as you are going to find in a "home" class device.

When you start looking at devices which do more, such as scanning for malware, you need a lot more power.

Was it really 1GB service as opposed to 1Gb service?

Both are impressive but 1GB would be amazing.

That's an impressive metropolitan area right there... they even have a traffic light :-)
