watched the whole last half...wow.
Just like a lot of other things Stan...you have to experience them, BEFORE you critique them.
If you have never been to Daytona or Talladega, you need to be quiet. These two tracks have something in common. Cars in packs of 40, three wide, going over 200 MPH. If you have never experienced this LIVE, you have NO IDEA what you are talking about. I have been to both. One year, I went to both in the same year. Very different tracks, but the same speed and sound. When the cars are away from you running in the huge pack, the sound of all the engines wide open in unison is over the top incredible. Same as Indy, F1, been to both type races also, they are a much higher pitch. Nothing can beat that sound that NASCAR makes in a group of cars.
YOU CAN NOT GET THIS FROM SITTING ON THE COUCH. PLEASE UNDERSTAND THIS. YOU ACTUALLY HAVE TO GET OFF YOUR BUTT, GET ON A PLANE SOUTH AND EAST OF YOU TO ONE OF TWO LOVELY LOCATIONS!
The only other REAL race, is the Bristol Night Race.
My wife took me for our tenth anniversary, Friday and Sat night!
Thunder Valley is a huge under statement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All true...NASCAR is an amazing spectacle to witness live. My first race was a night race at Bristol in the late 90's. Since then I've been to the Coke 600 at Charlotte, Richard Petty Experience at Charlotte [drove 30 laps on the track, top speed 155mph] and this year's Daytona 500. Incredible. Another must-do for any gearhead is an NHRA race. I attended the qualifiers at Z-Max last September. When the Top Fuel cars leave the line, your SKULL RATTLES to the extent that your vision blurs. Such mechanical violence is otherwise reserved for war and space travel. Experiencing these races live also teaches you how far we are from reproducing the actual dynamic range and visceral impact of these events in the home.

I really want JR to win a championship so I can stop watching. The sport went to shit after SR died in my opinion along with NASCAR getting very greedy in their marketing strategy. One thing that kind of bugged me, when Austin was out of the car he removed his HANS device and one of the commentators explained what it was (ok, two things annoyed me. One being they over explain everything, like John Madden). And he said, "they have been required by NASCAR for several years now". Anyone in the sport should be able to tell people how long the HANS device has been required. Since mid February 2001. That's when they also stopped the use of open faced helmets.

Thunder Valley is a huge under statement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My first time to Bristol, I was around 4 years old. They had concrete bleachers on the front stretch and the back stretch, and grass seats on each end of those in the turns. Then sometime in the 80's my grandfather took me to Bristol to watch a truck race. Big trucks, back when they still had semi-truck races. Talk about thunder. And one year (I think early 2000's) they hauled in tons and tons of red clay and covered the track and ran the Hav-A-Tampa outlaws. That turned into a huge lt down because with the track length and the banking they got going so fast they would spin out every 4th or 5th lap. Not sure if we ever saw them run more than 10 laps without a caution. Only time I ever left early.

And mandated seat belt mounting location and procedures. Feb 2001 was when NASCAR died. They just kept it on life support until the economy tanked and the new fans lost interest.

Just like a lot of other things Stan...you have to experience them, BEFORE you critique them. True! I love the roar of big assed engines. In Seattle (& SanDiego and a few other places... Detroit River) They have "unlimited" hydroplane racing. Big boats although nowadays they are all using Jet-Turbine engines...(boring) ---quiet, no bone rattling roar of piston power. ....B-B-B- back in the day... they used big Allison or Merlin airplane engines. We called them "thunder boats". The loudest roaring engines you could imagine. When they raced on Lake Washington you could hear them racing from about 40 to 50 miles away. We lived on the shores of Lake Washington, and as a kid it was beyond thrilling just to hear the roar of 6 of these boats ripping around the course... I used to like drag racing for the same reason... Had a 39 Ford coup with a hi-po 327 and open headers... gave me goose bumps to get her cranked up. ...So yeah, I gotta witness a Nascar and or Indy race, before I punch out the big time clock in the sky.

Indy 500 or Daytona 500...
If you have to do just one, I would go NASCAR, just for the excitement, and being close to the beach.

Bruce, Bristol is the best race to go to if you plan to do just one. Daytona and Talledega come in second. Bristol is great because you see everything no problem. And with 40 degree banks, they get some action going. The two super speedways are great because they run 3, and sometimes 4 wide at almost 200 mph. But, because of the size of the track, you can't see everything. I suggest avoiding the cookie cutter tracks they built during the NASCAR boom.
