On a related note, last night I had a conversation with my BIL that fits along this topic. He spent 15 years working for a huge German company. Won't say which one, but most of us have at least tried their tools, probably have their auto parts in our cars. He told me it was common for him to encounter an opinion of "Americans are stupid because they can't learn the metric system". But he flipped it how no, we actually learn both, and what europeaners don't realize, the USSE system of measurement has built the world. After WWII, we went in and rebuilt Europe, especially Germany on our standard of 4x8 measurements. They think everything is in metric, but that's only because they have figured out the conversions.

Even today, if they go into a store to buy a sheet of plywood, it's in 4x8 dimensions. And remember during the housing bubble when there was a drywall shortage partly because China was growing so fast? Yeah, they were buying building materials that were based on 16" centers. What's the point of this? Nothing really except that I found it humorous in that our influence on the world is more than just some underlying political plot to be the largest empire. Sometimes, things are more complex than we want to understand. And sometimes, maybe it's as simple as we were physically isolated from two world wars that destroyed the buildings and infrastructures of the old European empire.

Like most who make a comment like this, your first go to comments about freedom. You do realize there are many countries that offer freedom? This is not unique to the US. As of 2014, 45% of countries were classified as free, and 63% had electoral democracies. [Link: en.wikipedia.org]

The US is certainly one of the largest free countries, and might get many choices by immigrants for that reason alone. But I think if you'd take off the rose colored glasses and try to classify the US as a great country by some real criteria, you'd be hard pressed to put it at the top. So, feel free to tell us what criteria other than military spending the US is the best at!

Ernie, I know all about this country and unlike many I don't gloss over the stuff no one wants to talk about. My trolling in this thread was meant to draw lines connecting dots that people want to pretend don't exist. Dump some tea...patriot. Sell loose cigarettes...he deserved to be chokes to death. I don't remember anyone disrupting the 99%ers. And the ferguson protestors only had problems after the rioting started.

WHat crazy world do you live in where YOU believe that ANYONE said, hinted, suggested that selling loose cigarettes deserves death? Thats RHETIC and an ill fated attempt to paint a picture. If there was, Rachel Maddow wouldnt be on your DVR marked record-every-espidode. I wondered who cried when Air America failed. Now we know!

Ah screw it, I've had a couple drinks, so let's derail since Mac is so determined to. First of all, those aren't gang members. They are enthusiasts that belong to motorcycle clubs. (anyone that watched Sons Of Anarchy will get that).

Do you know why those Bikers are being treated the way they are in the photo? Because no matter how big of criminals they are, they comprehend that when the cops show up, it's stupid to resist arrest. Do as told, say "yes sir officer" and let their attorney earn their money. A guy selling looseys shouldn't die for his crime. But he did make the mistake of arguing with cops and resisting arrest. A smart person knows, you will never win at that moment.
