We have been approached by a building company who are refurb'ing an apartment that has existing Lutron "Quantum System" lighting controls in place.

They have asked if we can re-commission and program it once they have finished their works.

Although being Homeworks certified, we have not done much with Lutron lighting over the last year as we have mostly been installing Crestron lighting product (since we were also specifying and supplying Crestron Home Automation and AV controls it made sense to keep it all in the same family). Having therefore been out of the Lutron lighting sales loop for a while (although we have done quite a lot of QS Sivoia shades) I assumed that "Quantum System" was merely the full nomenclature for "QS" and that they had a Homeworks QS processor in place. The builder said that he had been told by Lutron that only "they" (Lutron) could program it, and again I thought what they really meant was that it needed to be programmed by someone who was Lutron trained and certified.

However.....

When I attended site to have a look today it appears that whilst the processor is the same form factor as the Homeworks item it is not labelled as such. Having had a brief look at the Lutron website on my return to the office it would appear that there is indeed a system known as "Quantum" and it looks to be targeted at Commercial space rather than residential.

So I guess I am trying to find out if "Quantum" is something that I would NOT be able to do as a Homeworks installer (as it is a different system with additional training requirements, different software, etc), or is it indeed only programmed by Lutron directly?

I am now worried that I may have mislead them a bit by saying that we would be able to commission and program it, as if it is indeed a totally different system platform to QS then we have not been trained on it, and I would like to let them know that I need to bow out, sooner rather than later.

I will contact my Lutron office (UK) tomorrow morning, but I know this will bug me all night unless I can get a heads up from someone in the know!

If it is indeed a separate platform, I would suggest that naming one platform "QS" and another "Quantum System" was not the brightest move... ;-)
What do you mean you wanted it on the other wall - couldn't you have mentioned this when we prewired?

Lutron Homeworks QS was based on some of the hardware from, and is compatible with some components of Luton Quantum Systems. They are not the same, however.

Pretty sure the name "QS" was based off of the name "Quantum System", but no not the same thing.

This is the same company who picked these names for these different shade products. Can you figure out which one is which? Quick! Which ones are battery powered?

1 - Serena
2 - Sivoia QS Triathlon
3 - Sivoia QS
4 - Sivoia QS Wireless

Answers:
1 - [battery powered roller or honeycomb shades, standalone only]
2 - [battery powered roller or honeycomb shades]
3 - [wired shades]
4 - [wireless communication, wired power]

I am currently working on a Office project with 8 new Quantum hubs being installed.
Most of the Lutron work we do is designed and commissioned by Lutron.

Lutron provides a system layout and we carry out the installation and help with the commissioning. All programming is done by a Lutron programmer who we hire as a sub. In most cases they are Lutron employee's.

I'm not sure about other cities, but in Toronto, Lutron has a group of Quantum programmers that specialize in large commercial projects. There are a few contractors that also commission Quantum systems, but most of the larger projects are done by Lutron directly.

I would contact Lutron directly.

Well I've officially withdrawn from the project as I think it's wrong to keep them on the hook merely on an off-chance of being able to proceed.

i have contacted Lutron support to ask what the score is but still awaiting a reply.

with 140 loads and circa 40 keypads it was a nice mid sized job, certainly within our capabilities were it not for needing dedicated and potentially unavailable software!!
