Will the 1040 do digital to analog on zone 2? Or do I have to go to the 3040 for that feature?

Conveniently found on page 85 of the 1040 manual: • Analog audio sources (including FM/AM radio), and USB and network sources can be output to Zone2. To enjoy the playback of an external device in Zone2, you need to connect the device to analog audio jacks of the unit.
Unless you mean digital information from HDMI sources played through the receiver's HDMI 2 output to zone 2 video or audio on "Party Mode"
No similar restriction to be found in the 2040/3040 manual.
I was told during a Yamaha seminar decades ago that the Japanese are famously collaborative and non-confrontational (among themselves, at least, WWII being a well-known example to the contrary), hence a reluctance to use simple negative terms like "This unit won't do that" Their focus is on stressing what they or their product will do, so the manuals are filled with detailed feature explanation while you need to read between the lines very carefully to find what they don't do.
