Brian, please tell us about the Elcaset.
Yes, I'm old enough to know they were available, and were never really popular.
The Elcaset was a very different problem, from that which I'm attributing to HDCP. The problem wasn't with the Elcaset standard, it was a fundamental problem with introducing a new product into a market that continues to innovate.
The Elcaset was too little, too late. By the time it was introduced, the sound benefits simply weren't that great, as the standard cassette was implementing Dolby B which provided close to the same performance.
When introducing a new product or standard, it needs to solve issues that are compelling, and remain unsolved by competing products. Fail at providing a compelling argument for upgrading an entrenched standard, and the new standard fails.
