Brian, please tell us about the Elcaset.

Damn Ernie, dragging up formats that died before must of our industry Compadres were born (not me of course, I am old and well remember the Sony Elcaset).

Yes, I'm old enough to know they were available, and were never really popular.

The Elcaset was a very different problem, from that which I'm attributing to HDCP. The problem wasn't with the Elcaset standard, it was a fundamental problem with introducing a new product into a market that continues to innovate.

The Elcaset was too little, too late. By the time it was introduced, the sound benefits simply weren't that great, as the standard cassette was implementing Dolby B which provided close to the same performance.

When introducing a new product or standard, it needs to solve issues that are compelling, and remain unsolved by competing products. Fail at providing a compelling argument for upgrading an entrenched standard, and the new standard fails.

As regards Sony receivers, here's sort of an out-of-the-mouths-of-babes comment from the , discussion at [Link: remotecentral.com]:

These Videos are awesome please continue to make them. I notice that the videos are made to teach people about audio. i have a suggestion. Could you teach us how to read the speaks [specs] in general products like a single driver (slp, etc). Also what to avoid when purchasing equipment. I am a college student (mechanical engineer) that loves audio but cant afford the really expensive stuff so i try to buy used klipsch products and have been very happy with them so far. I have a Sony receiver that i know is holding my system back. If i use it in two channel mode with the two main speakers it sounds fine to me but when i engage the 5.1 there is a noticeable hole in the frequency range . i am sure that your test equipment would show this (power vs frequency??) anyway i love this videos . thanks

It  goes on.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.
