Sometimes I have a fantasy.
In my fantasy, I ask a sound engineer why dialogue is so difficult to here in some move soundtracks.
He gives me his technical reasons for why it is done that way.
Then, I throttle his neck.

My thoughts on Movie Dialog issues. Two things that I can think of.
Volume Level distortion. If you do not listen to the movie at the "reference level" that the movie was mixed in, the "balance" of the mix will be off at the listener.
Horizontally arrayed center channels have suck outs at the crossover point making dialog seem lower in volume.
There may be others.

Tim,
Good point. I initially had my center channel positioned horizontally, and a quick 90 degree turn made a big difference in the dialogue clarity.
