I have a customer who's moving to the PHX area very soon and he was asking about me hanging a TV at the rear of the house, under a portico that's over his patio. I may be able to mount it far enough from the outer edge to avoid most blowing rain/dust/sand, but I haven't been there yet, so there's no guarantee about that. He was asking about some kind of marine canvas cover- I was thinking that it could have flaps with Velcro, like a boat cover, to fit around the mount and still prevent the rain/sand from getting in. Obviously, the finest stuff will still get in, but it would keep rain out.

I'm thinking of using an arm with a single bar, rather than two on each side and since it's a lightweight TV (32" Panasonic LCD), that shouldn't be a problem. It would allow me to wrap some kind of foam around the arm to cover the cables and act as a seal for the cover. If it has a draw string, it should cover the gaps.

Thoughts, experiences?

Any reason you haven't considered a Sunbrite or other outdoor TV? Would kind of solve all your issues in one fell swoop.

Money. I still need to charge for the trip, too. It's not gonna be cheap, but he trusts me and wants me to do it.

Fooled 'em again, says I!

I did see that Sunbrite sells covers, but not before I posted this.

He's going to have you travel from WI to AZ to do an install. I know it has to be more than just an outdoor TV... Right?

How about building a cabinet that is air tight when not in use?

I always sold a cover with Sunbrite's so it is an option. I believe I recall you could get their standard grey cover or custom options.

Wait ... this is a gag right?

Traveling across the country to custom install a indoor TV outside?

It's definitely more than just the TV- it's several rooms, a couple of systems and making sure it operates without hiccups. Not sure if they'd want a cabinet, but the option of that or TV failure might make a Sunbrite a good way to sell that.

No way a "indoor TV' survives for any length of time in AZ. If your customer trust you convince him to spend the money on the right TV.
