Yes, I've had GUI problems on the SR5009. Randomly, text will stop displaying. So the status of input/sound format/etc. just comes up as a blank black bar with icons but no text, or garbled characters (random pixels). When this happens, the menus are the same (no text, can't see anything) but otherwise it continues to operate fine. A hard reboot (pull the cord) solves it for a while.

Hmm... Haven't tried to do setup from that, but have used it for basic control while I was programming to try to remember what I had connected to which input. If I had the motivation to hook up the pile of equipment I have had sitting here since I moved in a year and a half ago, I would check right now...

no computer setup? (going to the IP address?)

I have been doing that with marantz lately, huge time saver!

Yes, you can do the setup over the network.

I ordered a Yamaha RX-A840 today to test.... I already know im going to be disappointed by it.

It's a great way to make sure your disappointed, by telling yourself you'll be disappointed.

Correct. Sounds great + unreliable = $ loss
Sounds decent + reliable = $ gained

...My only complaint is that you have to use the remote and have a display for setup menus. Aventage menus are much better than the older standard Yamaha menus.

You've been able to setup and store via IP (and previously direct connect USB or RS232) for almost a decade on Yamaha's at about $1000+, and can do quite a bit more with the setup then you can with just the remote and OSD

But its very easy to do the basics with just the remote...usually 5 minutes or less. Note that most do require firmware updates to allow all the streaming functions to work (ran into this trying to set up Sirius for a client)...plan accordingly as the initial update takes about 20 minutes on a good hardwired connection...would not recommend doing so wirelessly.

Setting your expectations low is great, but the Yamaha's do sound fantastic (in my opinion better than Marantz and other mass receiver brand manufacturers.

You should be pleasantly surprised.

When the onkyo's started having hdmi board problems a couple of years ago we switched to Yamaha aventage and love them, they have been rock solid for us and a breeze to setup. Integration has been excellent also, we always set them up via a pc and not from the gui.

We stopped using the NR series receivers.. They are the only ones that we have had issues with.

I seem to run into issues with the units 5000 series and below, but never on the upper stuff.

We just had our 3rd Aventage RX-A730 issue this year. Seems they get to 6 mo-1 yr and start shutting off randomly. Have not had a single issue in any higher end models in three years thankfully.
The only Marantz we ever do is the NR pieces for the size and I have had issues with them losing network connectivity.
